Geek Culture / Steam - Game Unavailable

I've been trying to play Counter Strike: Source and since Febuary it seems Steam doesn't want to work for me. Whenever I try to start a game, it says "This game is currently unavailable. Please try again at a later time". I've even gone about and uninstalled then re-installed Steam and Half Life 2/CS. Doing this I was able to run them each once and then they stopped working. I downloaded HL1 (it's on my steam profile) and was able to run it once aswell.

Has anybody else had this problem? I can find a whole bunch of people listing the issue on Google but none of the fixes listed help, and alot of people who claimed to get it working neglected to list HOW. I have to say, this is really annoying. I've never had a problem with Steam before.

Again, NONE of the suggestions in the Steam Help FAQ or any websites I could find fix the issue. Not even reinstalling steam.

Computer:

Windows Vista Ultimate (UAC OFF - So "Run it as Admin" won't work)
Quad Core Processor (2.4 GHz [each, I assume])
Nvidia 8800 GTS 640 MB
500 GB Hard Drive
2 GB of Memory

I'm pretty useless on Steam errors, (runs like a dream, so does yours but only it's a nightmare.)

Try this?

I hate steam so much. It ruins all my fun when I try and play something.
"sorry, I gots ta update your game"
or
"sorry, I gots ta update myself"
OR
"sorry, I feel like taking forever to load today, and your going to have to desperately open up task manager and end my task. Even then I may decide not to shut down, or crash your pc. Please don't sue my creators, Valve are great people. Lets worship them together, shall we? Oh valve, OH - " while Im pressing ctrl alt delete over and over again...
and lets not forget this one:
"sorry, not for you, but for anyone who still has dialup, because they cant get to any of the games they PAID FOR because they need a fast internet connection to download/update them."
Good thing I switched to hi-speed...

tee hee, forgive my rambling.

EDIT:
with a pc like that, why not play crysis instead?

Yep; Steam is the Devil. I'll never play another game that needs their useless software.

Steam has worked flawlessly for me and I've purchased over 20 games on it. It's perfect

Sorry to hear your troubles--- but I'd suggest stepping into 1999 and upgrading to broadband. If it's not available in your area, lobby your city council for the wires!

Some of your CSS .cfg (I think.) files could've been moved.

Go to your steamapps folder and see if there are roughly 6 of those there. (they should each be like 2gb, haha.)

Jeku - I did upgrade, but when I first got the orange box and I had dialup. On the box it said NOWHERE that you even needed internet too.
Oh well, I can see HOW it could be nice, but personally I have troubles with it.

Really? Mine did, on the "minimum requirements" sticker that you had to break to open the box? I guess some people just rip it open though.

I actually looked at my min requirements... I dont remember it saying that.
When I went to take it back (I eventually didnt though) I remember looking on the sticker and it saying nothing about that.
Ah well my memory can be bad at times.

There are four ways that you could have problems with one program

1. file goes missing. Open games window. Right click game press properties. click Local files and run verify intergrity of game cache... and then defragment.

2. Someone guessed your details and used your account. Loaded a cheat program and got you banned. Your have to buy a new copy as steam will not unlock.

3. You used a cheat program and got banned. Your have to buy a new copy as steam will not unlock.

4. You have programs open other than steam and steam doesn't like them.

It is more than likely number four as steam may not like vista. Steam will not open which was better than the auto ban.

I'll add something later on.

Steam is fine on Vista, or at least it is for me. Don't really know what to add as I have never had a problem with Steam.

Yeah, the massive label saying "Internet connection required, high speed internet connection recommended" said nothing about needing the internet

EDIT:
Quote: ""sorry, not for you, but for anyone who still has dialup, because they cant get to any of the games they PAID FOR because they need a fast internet connection to download/update them."

If you're on dial-up, you can just:

- Install off the disk
- Turn off updates for the game.

You really are whining about nothing. I got HL2 when it first came out when I still had dial-up. Ironically the initial release had to decrypt via Steam, so it did effectively d/load the entire thing (unlike the orange box) but it didn't take that long (3 hours, which is good for 56kbps). After that, it was playable, and I turned off updates (after it had updated initially that is)

I do - and I've beat it. I'm currently working through it on expert, and it's alot of fun - but I've been wanting to play with a friend on CS and so far no luck.

As I said, I've had no trouble with steam before this. I'll try some of the suggestions listed above (those posts that aren't completely dissing steam that is )

EDIT: Ack! Still nothing seems to work. I'll keep fiddling with it. It might be other tasks as sprite said, but that seems odd, as it works the first time you try and play it but not after that. *sigh* Well, I have an Xbox 360 for a reason

"Internet Connection Required"

I can only speak for the hl2 box

No, I mean the orange box box, and it only mentions internet connection FOR TF2, not for all of them.
Ill dig it out later.

Even if that is the case:

1) Most people have an internet connection
2) You only need to connect to activate. If you disconnect after that, it (The orange box at least) can install off of the disk (advantage vs. HL2 for instance)
3) Turn off game updates

I have the original Half Life 2 and I installed off the CD's just fine. As for updating, I like that it auto updates stuff, that way you always know its up to date.

Yeah, but the on-disc release of HL2 was screwy, most machines (i.e. mine) required at least the first round of updates at release time in order to run properly.

Well on my orange box case it has a box on the back with all the usual stuff i.e. OS:Windows Vista/XP/2000, Processor: 1.7GHz, Memory: 512MB RAM etc... which also says Internet: Hi-speed... Also in this box it says "This is the minimum specification your computer must meet to run this game"

So I guess your box must be different to mine

I think Steam is a rip-off... some games are £25-30 on there that you could easily get for £5-10 on the high street, even from well known premium seller Game. *cough cough*Flatout 2*cough cough*

I pulled out my box and I cant find requirements on it at all!!!
It was probobly on the outside wrapper, though usually games have it on the box too.
I blame this on steam also.

In todays world "Retarded" has separate meanings...
depending on how it's put.

There's retarded as in
[1] "Youre being retarded because youre whining about steam problems and trashing the app yet the problems you described can be easily fixed if you took two minutes to search the issue"
[2] "Youre actually mentally retarded"

I said it in the context of 1
But I'm sure you haven't heard it used that way yet...
obviously. I'll edit my post...

But enough of this silliness. Most people have no problem with steam, the small % that do go around deeming it "suck" or "gay" or "worst" whatever as if they are the judge and jury. In the end its a consumer product, if you have an issue with it there are tons of remedies to the problems freely available by searching. If for some reason it still doesnt work you then have to decide if you are going to uninstall it or not. period.

I am in the middle of a driver issue with Logitech and Zone Alarm (well known) but you dont see me up here whining. I researched the issue, found a temporary, but less than perfect solution, and have implemented it. period. You wont see me up here calling logitech "worst" "suck" or "gay", or "retarded" for that matter.

Oh good lord! HUSH! All of you!

I'm trying to see if anyone has a solution to a problem that refuses to go away despite the many things I have tried and I'm getting a flame war

I like Valve's games. I like Steam (simply for the uniformality it provides if nothing else). Occasionally it acts poorly. I didn't come here to get people started on a "steam sux/no it don't" war. You're killing me here

So if we could all just focus on the issue at hand to make my life better you can later kill each other over pointless bickering.
