While on my way to the forums earlier, I saw an advertisement at the bottom of TGC for a game called Starport. I don't know why, but I felt intrigued and decided to take a look at the game. It's a free MMO set in space, where you're the captain of a spaceship and fly around trading goods and acting like a "space taxi."

The graphics are... well, what can be said really? They're 2D, and remind me of the old game "Subspace." The most impressive thing I've seen in the physics is that flying close to suns will put you in an orbit. The music is heavy with the MIDI, you don't get many options when building a character, and the game has a gnarly steep learning curve that most likely deters people from playing longer than a few minutes. But after spending about 20 minutes in the game, all of these negatives were somewhat neutralized. I haven't killed anything, I haven't really learned much of the commands and whatnot, but it seems like a fairly fun game.

So anyway, is anyone else playing this/ has anyone tried it? It's free, it's indie, and it's sort of fun, so I figured I'd see if anyone wants to give it a try. We could make a "corporation" in the game or whatever, like a TGC clan ("guild") so to speak, although so far I don't really know what that is, lol.

Played it for a while ages back. It was quite fun, taking over planets and building bases on them just to log on the next day and find someone attacked all of them and you have nothing left .

Would consider playing it again but I don't really have time at the moment.

Or buy Evochron Renegades, which is only $24,99 and awesome in a big MP game.

I've been playing this while my girlfriend plays WoW, usually late at night. The problem is that you run out of warp fuel too quickly to build up colonies quickly. But, I have three different corporations on three different servers, so if anyone wants to play this with me and help spread out to conquer stuff, email or YIM me and I'll give you the server name, corporation name, and the corporate password.

I've made three different corporations in three different servers... "The Classic Homeworlds" has the corp "Equinox Trade Inc.", the "Perma 4 - New Dawn" server has the corp "Brotherhood of Steel," and the server Permaverse 5 has the corp "Arsenal Inc." Yeah, they aren't very inspired names lol . Permaverse 5's corp has the best planets, three earthlike ones, and, while New Dawn has the most (I think I have four or five now). The password is also uninspired, lol... "tgc" to join. Try to defend our planets as best you can, we have more than we should I think

Ok, sorry to bring this back, but I've been playing for a couple weeks now and I must say this is one of the most entertaining and addictive games I've played in a long time.

It's a very simple game, and the learning curve is steep for about the first couple days, then it all makes sense and you know what you want to do.

There's some things you simply have to go and find a guide for, like building colonies and such. Also, you'll want to pull up blackhole maps so you can get around the galaxy more efficient, but that's about all you need in order to really enjoy the game.

Over the last few days I've taken it upon myself to start policing the galaxy, and I had my butt handed to me by this pirate dude with what seemed like unlimited nukes. He blew me up within a few seconds, and I barely scratched him.

Needless to say I swore at the screen, lost a few hours worth of work (since my ship was lost), and had to high tail it back to base to get a new ship.

Oh but I'll have my revenge one day, once my colony starts producing nukes

The one thing I can advise a new player is, when you start out, trade between star ports until you can afford the whale ship. Keep upgrading until you've bought yourself the gravity gun and battle scanners and an extra million or two set aside in the bank should you get blown up. The other type of scanners in the game I've found aren't nearly as useful as battle scanners, no matter what you deal in. Once you have a high class weapon and the battle scanners, you've got enough invested that you can do whatever you really want in the game, and you can trade your ship in for whatever you want. You get to keep your weapon and scanners when you trade in a ship.

Hurray for teh logd!

So I downloaded it, seems like a fun game. I completed the tutorial easy enough. I'm on the new dawn server as of right now. But how do you join a corporation?

From memory, I think you join by bringing your mouse to the top of the screen, clicking "Game > corporations" locating the specific corp, entering the password and clicking join.

I play on classic mainly and on the small 4 hour rotating server who's name I forget.

I just tried it, but got told to leave as BT are hopeless and I'm getting 75-80% packet loss.

ouch! You might want to try a different server in the game, although I haven't had any symptom like you're describing.

No, it's just that BT cannot provide a decent service, and there's no point changing because any other provider will use the same shoddy network.

When you have a mission, how do you check what you have to do next? I forgot what I needed to do, any shortcut or something?

Well, that game seems fun...I downloaded it and went through the tutorial, then I tried to join your corporation "Equinox Trade Inc." but it said it was full...

Then I landed on a planet, apparently Mercury, and a whole bunch of people were just sitting around. I was the only one moving...Strange.
