After seeing Ocho Geek's tutorial I decided to make one...

::EDIT::
Sorry for small sizes of pics, I'll include a download with them in.

Step 1:
Open photoshop and make a new Canvas size of 512 by 512 pixels...


Step 2:
Add the texture you want to make seemless...


Step 3:
Select and copy one side of the texture:


Step 4:
Move the copied part to the other side of the texture...
(no pic)

Step 5:
Flip the copied part horizontaly
(no pic)

Step 6:
Rub out bits (do NOT rub out the edges) to make it blend with the texture..

And BANG...You have a seamless texture.

This was interesting and good for beginners but I think it's important to ensure you emphasise the need for layers and the clone / stamp tool for maximum control and precision.

Creating a duplicate layer background and using photoshop offset filter is quick, then you can just use erase, clone and stamp tools to make pixel perfect adjustments.

This tutorial really helped me get better at making seamless textures.

Ok here is the 'after' shot of my free texture now looking much more usable after some tweaking.

Thanks for a useful thread. I used to rely on mirrored textures to get a more realistic look across larger surface areas and someone pointed out to me that it would be better to use seamless.

Also here is a link to the latest ID tech 5 engine demo showing a guy using stamps to produce highly detailed textured environments with layers, cloning and stamps to take these ideas further (see about 4:10 onwards).
