It wasn't a spambot, because they send to individual addresses. This was one email sent to many people all at once, or didn't you read that far into the first post?

Unfortunately, it was probably from a throw-away gmail account, so we'll never really know who it was

With all this spam coming in these days, who cares? I don't see why anyone should make a big deal out of this, which in return only gives the spammer guy what he wanted; attention. Forget about it.

I rarely get spam in my Hotmail inbox, the majority of it goes straight to the spam folder.

they send you the spam e-mail once then you mark them as unsafe and from there all the e-mail from the same guy is blocked aka deleted before it reaches my inbox

By what criteria? They use a different spoofed address and subject line a lot of the time.

yeah but don't you think they'll get tired of making new e-mail addresses? I'm sure the spammer won't change his e-mail because one of his victims decided to block him.
[edit] and if it was a spam bot you would just do the same thing

Most of them probably use randomly generated addresses, so no.

I'd suggest using POPFile, found at Sourceforge.net.

It learns what *kinds* of emails are spam, and gets smarter with each day. Everytime a spam message gets through, mark it as spam, and it scans the words and builds a giant lookup table of words and their likelihood of being spam or not. You can also setup other categories, i.e. business, TGC, etc. It runs on top of most mail clients (Thunderbird, Eudora, Outlook Express, etc.)

It's pretty amazing, actually.

I find that Juno.com seems to block spam really really well if you can put up with a 1 gig email inbox limit.

My G-mail blocks between 700 and 1000 spam-mails per week. I even installed a Greasemonkey script (yeah, I got that thing Jess kept talking about) to not see the number of Spam in my G-mail, as it's utterly annoying.

The problem is the use of mailto: links for email. Most spambots just look for these links and use them to harvest emails. Most sites by now know to use a mail form with a captcha that doesn't reveal the email stuff is being sent to. Basically, this makes it so bots cant harvest emails, nor can they send them through the form without having a human do the captcha, which dramatically sows down the rate at which spams can be sent. It would be great if these forums changed away from mailto links, as mailto links really re the reason you all get so much spam, and the reason I havent posted my email.
