I've made an exe with a custom icon (it is a .BMP file, not a .ICO)
it displays fine as the App Icon when compiled, but, when you drag the app .EXE, you get the standard DBPro pyramid icon until you release the mouse..

does this happen if you use "proper" .ICO files, and if not, can you recommend a free ICO maker?

I think most files have a set of 3 (or more) icons; one small, one midsized and one large for different display modes (list, thumbnails, and so on).
Either, you can't change these from the IDE, or you can (by passing it several icons).

Heck, when running ResEdit on a DBPro compiled project, it even contains the demo image "This was created by DBPro. Press here to buy".

You could use that anyways (ResEdit) to set all (I think) icons of the finished application.

I had a go at ICOfx and it worked a treat. ICO files (with many dfferent resolutions) work perfectly

After (originally) adding a BMP to my project, and loading the exe into ICOfx, I noticed that it had made 32x32 and 16x16 icons. I reckon it needed a 48x48 Icon for dragging...

ResEdit was a complete mystery to me, as the help files wouldn't work, and it was asking for some file on first run and I didn't have aclue what it was talking about!

speaking of icofx. I used it and it seemed to work well except that I can't actually launch any of the programs I change the icon for. Why is this?

how are you changing the icon ?

All I did, was to make the Icon, save it, and (using codesurge) "Add Icons" into my project. Worked twice so far

I tried to use the resource editor to have icofx change the icon for me...should I just be using the DBPro editor to do this instead? Or should I go and download codesurge?

you could try the default editor, but there really isn't much reason to not be using codesurge (unless you happen to be coding in windows vista business, in which the menu's aren't very responsive)...
