Why oh why is svchost.dll taking 25seconds from my boot time..and yet cpu and such are at 0..its just sitting there...loading or something...

Running bootvis I discovered why my computer takes 45 seconds to boot... just think...without this 25second wait i could be conquering my code with only a 20-25 second boot

There is a slim possibily you have a virus as there are a couple that attack that file.

I assume you are running an up to date virus checker.

Other than that I have no idea.

svchost.dll is the main DLL for norton active anti-virus...
whenever you open a file, download a file or just browing directories - that little bugger will take 45% of your CPU speed and between 32-300mb of ram (the more you have the more it snatches)

and turning it off doesn't stop it completely

Could be a virus, search google and anti virus sites, do an online scan if you have no virus scanner.

What os do you have? It's not on my install of xphome.

if its a virus then ALL of my computer have it too ... and i'm sure most other peoples would show it.

of course it won't be on XP Home because as i've already said IT IS PART OF NORTON ANTI-VIRUS

And as sonic has said it could be a virus as it is used by some.

If he has no Norton he might think it was part of windows, I say it's not on xp home, if he has xp home then he knows somthing is amiss and fixes it.

i just happen to have norton...so i doubt it's a virus...

Dr. Solomons ... but its bloody expensive - McAfee isn't likely to catch any virus's even simple ones, PcCillin is pretty piss poor, really Norton is about the best around, unfortunately its also the most system heavy

well..it doesn't bother me that it consumes alot when scanning...but 25 freakin seconds of just idle time is rediculous...i haven't had the chance to update it yet though...so I'll see if that works..

the 45 second wait isn't that bad...but...for the amount of software i go through every week that requires restartingO_o..it sucks waitin:p

yeah i suppose... my system boots up in 11seconds which i think is slow, but then Norton's is really just one of the best you can get - i didn't like the price of Solomons for XP so i stopped my subscription, was already $120/quarter

in a nutshell svchost checks the registry then starts running win2k/xp services in the background.

The time delay means you have got a lot of services running.

try http://www.blackviper.com/WIN2K/servicecfg.htm

This site gives a list of services as well as advice on which ones are safe to switch off.

Should give you a wee bit of a performance boost as well as speeding up the booting.

I suspect norton is set to run as a service so is linked to svchost in some way.

We have AGV Anti-Virus, I'm not sure how that rates next to Norton, but we haven't had a virus that it couldn't find yet.

AVG is excellent, and is free.

Again, I will ask, did you try running going into console mode (DOS Mode) to run "tlist.exe svchost.dll" to see what all is hanging onto it?

ok...i already disabled all non-essential services ill check

what's tlist? couldn't find it on my hdd

doh! and it was svchost.exe sorry for the confusion...still tho how would i fix it...

Jerico don't listen to 8truths, as you won't find tlist on your system.
and Hamish, just because you don't find an virus doesn't mean they're not there ... McAfee doesn't find many virus's so you think your safe - put a disk into a Norton system just to find out it has Empire Monkey B or something stupid.

If it is the exe then you have less to worry about - disabling services is prolly the only way to go here + the ususal defrag and stuff.
