So right now I have

AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 3600+ 1.9GHz

and I WANT

AMD Athlon 64 X2 6400+ Windsor 3.2GHz 2 x 1MB L2 Cache Socket AM2 125W Dual-Core Processor

for just under $200. I just want a good upgrade that is compatible with my MB. I've never upgraded a proc before but they are both the same sockets and stuff.

IS that a good pick? Good price? My power supply is labled as 305w max so that means I should be alright running a 125w proc no?

Sorry for all the noob qs but yeah like i said i have never upgraded a proc b4.

thanks

I'd buy a AMD Athlon 5000+ x2 Black Edition, cheaper and apparently it overclocks well. But it depends on the socket type of you motherboard.

Is it AM2 or 939?

???

That's the processor I have. It is so nice, nearly unbelievable, haha. And it's got a really nice price too. I think I got mine for roughly $120.

EDIT: But the only disadvantage is that it doesn't come with a heatsync.

Socket is AM2 and how would the 5000 be better than the 6400+?

It's mainly a gaming computer so I'd like to get something decent but keep it around 200

Yeah I got 60 fps (with my 8800 GTS 640mb) in Crysis, full everything.

I don't know how it runs on 2 or 3 gigs of RAM, because I have 4.

But it really is a nice processor.

Give me a minute and I will gave a lowdown and buying CPU's.

Ok here we go.

You should go and buy an OEM processor since you seem to already have a heatsink, buy make sure to buy some thermal grease. If you plan to overclock the CPU, get a Black Edition AMD CPU of your choice, you can pick up a cheaper one and OC it make as fast/faster than a more expensive one (It sounds good, but it could fry the chip, be careful). If not get a normal AMD CPU of your choice, also get the fastest you can if you don't plan to OC. That's about it. Make sure to clean the heatsink and old CPU off. Keep the heatsink and send the CPU to your basement or eBay.

Ok I just found this one and im like 95% im going to buy it today unless anyone has a good reason for me not to:

AMD Phenom X4 9600 Quad Core Processor HD9600WCJ4BGDC - 2.30GHz, 4MB Cache, 1800MHz (3600 MT/s) FSB, Agena, Quad-Core, OEM, Socket AM2+, Processor

Thats a QUAD core

Have you got a compatible motherboard? I think AM2+ won't run on an AM2 motherboard.

Well the socket type is labeled as AM2/AM2+

so.... im not sure I thought the same thing but that kind of makes it look like it should work.
