Whenever I open a window that uses DirectX, my monitor starts making strange noises. The monitor has speakers, but I've got the volume muted. If I turn off the monitor the noises stop (obviously). If I shrink/close the DirectX window the noises stop. MeshView.exe makes it the most noticeable.

So any ideas as to why its making noises, or how to get them to stop? It's getting a bit annoying. And the pitch varies with the model that I open up.

it could be your graphics card dieing. since your monitor is plugged into your graphics card, once you start running graphics intensive operations, it could start to show that your graphics card can't handle it anymore. how old is it? what model?

It better not be dieing...it's an 8600 GTS, that is about 3-4 months old. But why would that cause the monitor to make noise?

well, i know almost nothing about this sort of thing but is it possible to have some loose or crossed wires or something in the monitor causing the built in speakers to make noise based on what the graphics card is sending it and not the sound card?

I suspect it's interference. Try repositioning your monitor cables.

It could be interference directly from inside, in which case, there's probably not much you can do unless you have an external soundcard which you could reposition.

You could try unplugging the speakers to see if the noise goes away.

Hurray for teh logd!

Unplugging the speakers didn't change anything. I'll mess with the cables a bit later. Though I'm not actually sure anymore if it is coming from the monitor, or the computer, or both.

It could be DirectX Sound and your sound card going nuts.

How would that be DirectX?

How about turning the speakers off, not mute.

What type of monitor? CRT or LCD?
Im guessing CRT, because it could be a problem with the tube in it or the circuity making the tube do weird things.

Whether I mute the speakers, turn them off, unplug the cable, it doesn't change anything. The monitor is an LCD, though I've got a CRT one too, but I keep that off unless I actually need dual screens. Though I'm not actually sure that it's the monitor anymore as I said above.

OMG!!! YOUR COMPUTER IS POSSESSED!!!!!

It's too bad I know next to nothing about this sort of thing--my best guess would be the graphics card thing jasonhtml posted earlier.

Thanks BigAdd!!

wait, but before you decided that its ur graphics card (which would suck, cause that would be some money to replace if it isn't in warranty)... is to check your monitor cables like jerico said, but make sure they are secure into your graphics card. two screws should be holding the cable to the card.

also, what kind of noise is it exactly? is it a high pitched noise? and are you ABSOLUTELY sure its coming from your MONITOR? listen to your computer case, cause it might be coming from there...

Try shielding your cables, like wrap em' in copper mesh or something. I know that whenever my friends phone goes off even near my speakers they freak out, off or on. So, something could be producing magnetic interference with the cables, or even the little magnets inside the speakers.

If you have 2 monitors, test it on the second one. Process of elimination and all that...
