Last week I successfully transfered my steamapps folder over to my new machine, under a fresh install of steam. All but one of my games works perfectly - ep2. Yesterday I tried to run it and it runs the valve logo screen (pipe-head), and the source and lambda credits screens, then it shows the ep2 back image (set to blurry), and displayes the "Loading..." text at the lower right. The mouse goes to hour glass and sits. And sits. And nothing. I tried leaving it for 10 minutes. Nothing. The computer is not frozen I am just stuck in that screen with a non-loaded or non-running game. When this happens I have to reset because the windows key does nothing, and ctrl+alt+del launches the task mananger but it wont come to the front.

What I have tried:
-deleted all local content and re-downloaded EP2, no.
-deleted ClientRegistry.blob, no.

What I have not tried:
-Launching ep2 from shortcut and including the resolution switches, but I will try that next.

Since everything else is perfectly fine I dont think this is a steam issue, or some underlying system issue with the steam apps, it seems to be just this one game. Has anyone encountered this, or a similar issue, with a steam game? What did you do to fix it?

thanks

Guitar Hero III and Test Drive Unlimited do this to me. That said, my PC is four years old, but it's perfectly capable of Oblivion and Just Cause, so it should be enough.

ah, steam screws up yet another person's life.

All my steam games take forever to load, let it go overnight and see what happens.

its not a steam issue. I am fairly certain that its an issue with the game in particular not mode switching correctly, and/or something from my original machine is preserved somewhere thats causing it to hang, even tho I deleted the local content. That deletion only kills the gcf files, not all of the files related to the game. I wasnt sure if I should delete those folders/files manually so I didnt.

check in the documents and settings/user/application data or /my documents folder (where a lot of game folders reside). Be sure to have on hidden files and folders

Delete hl2 folders as needed.

solved it.

by setting the shortcut with:

"...\Steam.exe" -applaunch 420 -console -sw -w 1024 -h 768 -refresh 60

the game loaded windowed and got past the "loading..." bit.
then I used the options menu to set it back to my correct settings, applied, and exited the game. then I removed the -sw -w 1024 -h 768 -refresh 60 from the shortcut, saved it, launched it and all is well again

thanks anyway all

It took me 45 minutes or so to beat just that end. How could valve be so mean as to put hu****s along side and piss you off even more?

I didn't find the end to be that hard. Just throw logs or heavy objects at the <enemies>, it takes em down pretty quick.

There are over 100 billion galaxies in our observable universe, each containing up to a trillion stars.

Feeling small yet?

no no, Ive already played and finished the game, but I just built a new pc and wanted to see it again on the better system.

and for the record, concerning X-Fi sound processors from creative labs... I ran the hl2:loast cost Video Stress Test, the first time with the audio set to Entertainment mode, that yielded an average framerate of 116 fps. Then I set the x-fi to Gaming Mode and reran the test... average framerate 153 fps So when creative labs says games will run faster, they arent lying. Just thought I'd share. I was using an sb live all these years, and completely bypassed/missed Audigy cards, but when I built my new rig, after having tried the pci-e audio card that came with the board (asus maximus extreme + hd 8 channel audio(sound max drivers)) and realizing it sucked ass (kept crapping out) I decided to get a separate audio card. Ended up with the xfi extreme gamer, which has the connector for the case front panel Intel HD... I think I need to make a "my new rig specs" thread...
