Here's a little puzzle:

I have a machine that you put a rock into, and it beeps if the rock contains a fossil. It is not perfect, but it is almost perfect - 99.9% of the time, it gives the correct answer. (1 in 1000 times, it glitches)

I put a rock in, and it beeps - should I be excited? Would you expect there to be a fossil inside?

No, you shouldn't be excited, fossils aren't exiting.

Not sure. Yes, i suppose you should if it's such a low likely hood it will fail, but now you're going to pull something out indicating I'm wrong, aren't you?

Well the odds of finding a fossil in a random rock has got to have similar odds if not far worse odds than 1 in 1000...

Depends entirely on how often you "expect" there to be a fossil inside.

If you expected no fossils at all you would still expect no fossils even if it bleeped - which it will do 1 in 1000 times.

The law of probability that you are presumably referring to is the reason why medics are reluctant to scan everyone for rare diseases - you'd be swamped by false alarms.

Yeah, even if it beeps, there is probably still not a rock inside it.

Basically far less that 1 in 1000 rocks have fossils in them...

If, say, 1 in 1000000 rocks contain fossils, then it is a thousand times more likely that the machine malfunctioned than the rock contains a fossil.
