I'm gonna set up an wireless connection on somoene's Xbox 360 but as far as I can gather from the internet you need to buy a seperate wireless USB adapter for your 360. Is this true for all 360 models? I don't own my own 360 and never really set one up before so I feel kinda dumb Any info would be appreciated from you Xbox owners.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16874103016
That's the item I assume I need to buy.

Don't even THINK about turning this into a PS3 vs Wii vs 360 thread until my question has been answered...

As far as I know my friend never had to buy anything other then the 360 to connect to the internet. But I could be wrong...

Well, I know it has ethernet ports built in, but I dunno about wireless stuff for sure. Just wanted to make sure before I made these kind folks spend another $100

None of the 360 models have built in wireless. As you said you will have to buy one of those USB adapters.

I think wireless is extra and is sux lag for online gaming IMHO.

I just wired mine in with a cable up to the router for free.

PS3 has wireless internet, but Microsoft will be making X360 with built-in one. Now you have to buy in adapter from them (like every X360 accesory)...

Ok, thanks guys. Accoun, you're dangerously close to sparking debate. Keep PS3 out of this for a little while please ^_^

Yeah, I had to get the wireless thing. However my wireless is apparently better than any wireless anywhere on the planet by the way people talk about it because I have never had a wink of lagg that wasn't caused by the host, not even when I'm streaming something in HD on my computer.

Lag shouldn't really be a problem unless the location of your 360 means it has a poor signal, or your wireless access point is being shared with other machines. I doubt many people have a broadband connection faster than a decent wireless connection.

My wireless is upstairs, the router is downstairs, so the signal travels through a floor and two walls and stay just fine haha.

Glad to hear it Osiris! I am slightly worried by what I read off reviews about it, but I assume it's just nitpicking.

My wireless is quite slow (but thats to do with my router, not anything else), but i don't fancy forking out 60 quid for a wireless adapter, i've also just stretched my wire over to my 360, works really well. I got bored of live quite quickly though and i don't get chance or the drive to play games half as much as i did before, so i won't be forking out for a subscription.

There are a lot of different factors that decide the speed and dependability of wireless Internet. It can be very hard to predict how well it will work, or even why its working. I would highly recommend wired Internet because of these potential problems.

Most pro gamers will tell you that wireless if for n00bs because it has several problems.

1. It takes more time for a signal to be transmitted via wireless than via a wire. This means that your latency is a little higher (every millisecond counts).

2. Packet loss. With wireless, there is always some packet loss which causes random spikes in your latency. e.g. in counter-strike source packet loss causes you to freeze movement and then jump forward the distance you would have traveled had you not been frozen (very annoying). Of course, this varies depending on what wireless adapter/receiver you have, how far away you are from the receiver and what is in between.

Because of these problems, I bought a 30meter cable and trailed it through my house. Later, I then drilled a hole in the floor (the router is below me) and dropped it through the hole.

The is nothing worse than spending 2 weeks getting a level on your RPG to have your WiFi drop out and disconnect you from the game in the middle of fighting a Dragon to log back in and find you've lost the level and one of your rare equips

It has Wifi for remotes built in but oddly can't talk to your router.

I found the 360 Wifi remote controllers interfered with my WiFi PC and Netgear router too! I've got a new router which doesn't suffer this problem so I guess it was the routers issue.

Found this article where MS have stated that this rumor isn't true. However, they have done the same before where the rumor turned out to be true. If there is a new 360 in the making with a BD player, MS wouldn't want anyone to know because that would be bad for sales.

I don't know what radio system they are using but it's too strong. I complained to MS as to why I needed a radio signal powerfull enough to be used 2 rooms away from the console as with two walls in the way I couldn't see the screen!

I wasn't the only one who had problem they put 360 demo consoles in WallMart and all their electronic tills stopped working LOL

We had 2 360s set up at a convention in separate (wall to wall) rooms, took a while until we figured out how to properly set up the controls.

I have a PS3 that is connected to the router which is used by this computer, another laptop, and a PSP. Strange, huh? I can't even get the update for PS Network. I might get a 360 for my Bday upcoming and i might get a w/less adapter for it. I've heard that my friend can connect without any router. Very odd...

Look for X10~photon on Halo: Combat Evolved mostly in mod areas.

You mean Bluetooth

I could see the *next* Xbox having a built-in BD drive for BD games, but not this generation. That is unprecedented--- they can't just make a different type of existing console that is not compatible and expect anyone to buy into it.

Its not that bad having it so powerful for home use. I mean if you are trying to set up 2 360's in the same house just set up the 1st ones controls THEN the seconds...just don't try them at the same time. Thats like trying to open a locked car door at the same time someone is trying to unlock it.

£60 for a wireless connection!
Buy a big cable :p
I'm shocked how little is built into the xb360, is hd-dvd drive built-in?
hopefully not as they've kind of lost the hi-def battle

If the 360 were released today, it would have built-in wireless. Remember that it was released before the PS3 and Wii, so it wasn't standard at the time to have built-in wireless (at the end of 2005 when it was released).

The 360 controllers aren't bluetooth, they're just some proprietary RF thing. Also is Microsoft really that invested in the HD-DVD format? It seems like they just picked one of the two because it was unclear in 2004-2005 which was going to win.

The offical word is that MS will download or stream films across the internet for the 360. For the 720 who knows.

@jeku
that's a fair point.

The one thing I really like about the xb360 is the controller, is there a way to use one with my PS3?
Have they made a wireless one without the horrid battery pack?

The Wireless adapters are pretty steep. You could always bridge two wireless routers. Dunno if that is possible, but it would certainly work out a lot cheaper.

That's correct. Its a 2.4GHz RF connection. The PS3 controllers use Bluetooth which is where people may be getting mixed up.

Microsoft were pretty invested in HD-DVD as they were the ones who created the HDi interactive menu system used on HD-DVD disks.

360 have (had) a standalone HD-DVD player and before the end Vista wasn't planned to have built in support of BD.
