Geek Culture / Internet Problems (Modem mainly)

My internet has worked without any problems for as long as we have had it, but last night, it wouldnt connect

according to the modem all the cords were plugged in as all the lights were on and solid except for the internet connection one (which flickered every few minutes), meaning that the modem was working and connected but the internet constantly failed to connect

i may have to call my ISP tonight and ask them.

if any of you have experienced this can you please provide any knowledge you have on the subject

When you say modem do you mean Cable Modem? My Road Runner NYC cable modem was down when I got up this morning (6 am edt), we had bad weather roll thru the north east last night so it may have been that. Not sure where you are other than in "cyberspace" so I cant say if its related. The modem came back up by 6:20 am which was nice. I have only had 2 or 3 occassions where I lost service with rr since 1999, and usually after that my ip range changes wildly. this time it didnt change so I'm thinking the weather had something to do with it.

If you have Comcast, my stuff is acting up now too, T.V. is flickering and the internet is freaking out.

In my own experience, sudden loss of service usually means you didn't pay the bill, often because you got a new credit/debit card and didn't give your ISP the new numbers. It would be good customer service if they called you before cutting you off but they don't!

Either that or they figue no-one uses modems anymore and they switched off the modem service!

In my experience what you are talking about means your micro filter has broken. I've had about 5 BT micro filters over the last 5 years that have messed up. If you are with BT, ringing customer support will result in randomly generated reasons: e.g. "we are clearing the traffic on your line".

Also, I get a similar thing when it rains in my area. This is because BT are too cheap to find out where the damn leak is and go and fix it.

It could also be that someone has ripped out the copper wire that your internet uses because copper is worth so much these days. Near me, a gang posing as BT engineers successfully removed a load of copper wiring from underground.

most dsl modems don't require a filter before you plug it into the modem. You should plug your phone line directly into the dsl modem.

I'm fairly sure that all DSL modems do require a filter if you want to use a phone in your house on the same line. I could be wrong though, I'm no expert.

No, most dsl modems have a built in filter. If you want to connect a phone on a different jack, then you need the filter.

If you're connecting the phone to your dsl modem out line, you do not need a filter.

thanks for the help, but it turns out that the password had been changed and hadnt been changed on the modem
so its fixed now
