how can all the hackers on TV and Movies just jump on any computer no matter what operating system it is and just use the keyboard and not even touch the mouse?

Is this for Real or just made up for the movies?

Made up for the movies probably. They might, however just need the command prompt to get around.

Hackers know all the 1337 keyboard shortcutz

Alot of movies are rubbish about hacking. 'Live Free Die Hard', a recent movie, showed a guy getting a virus. He pressed the delete button and it appeared to start deleting the virus after a message came up telling him his computer was infected I almost threw up.

Its call ShortCuts, Most major programmes, operations, ect on an OS System have MultiKey Shortcuts, As also said above, the Ctrl+R and Cmd Prompt can run loads more, but in movies it is mainly main up, If you watch SwardFish, where they have a 6/7 Screen System and no mouse, thats made up

But still its a good movie

You should try the Keyboard Shortcuts to Rotate the screen, Thats a good one, Try searching for HotKeys

Didn't he press the delete key and that activated some C-4 explosive hidden in his computer and blow him up? I can see that happening if you had enough time to rig something like that.

http://allhotkeys.com/ has XP + new vista hotkeys, and for most major applications, you can save a lot of time using them if your constantly on a computer.

It was when they pressed Ctrl + Alt + Del that it exploded because the virus made the computer freeze. At least, thats what I got for it. Didn't really matter because they sent in guys to kill the hacker anyways :/ . I liked that movie though.

I'm always disgusted by movies and their generic OS's and totally bloated looking graphics just to give it the sci-fi or techie look or something. I guess navigating windows and using command prompt is kinda boring though xD

I once saw a movie where some guy kept pressing rapidly on the keyboard to download a file faster. It didn't work for me though.

Totally possible. Alt-F4, the windows key, the arrow keys, and the alt key can get you anywhere in windows. (little known fact - the alt key opens the menu bar and then you can use the arrows and enter to move around). I usually sit down at a windows computer and never touch the mouse, because I find it difficult and awkward to use. The exception is clicking a link when browsing the web, because i really dont want to tab though every link....
On mac, apple-tab works somewhat like alt-tab, except it cycles through programs. control-F4 cycles though all the windows. control-F3 goes to the dock, and lets you use that. control-F2 opens the menubar and lets you use the arrow keys for that.
Haven't had enough time in X/KDE/GNOME to figure them out (I haven't yet used a machine with this as my main machine, but I will soon).

And why is this useful? Well, at my school, many of the mice are broken, and the school is too cheap/slow to replace them. Also, people think its funny to steal trackballs. So not having to use a mouse is a real plus. Then I found that I was sitting down and using these shortcuts anyway, and decided to go (mostly) mouseless. Its really nice (but beware of people who ask you how you get on without a mouse).

The Net is probably the movie that have the most accurate use of computers. They even made a software that allowed the actor to type whatever on the keyboard but the correct text appeared on screen. It's from 95 so it's a trip down the memory lane

There's a dude at work who does everything in Windows in the Command Prompt, faster than we can use the mouse--- it's absolutely crazy. There are people out there who eat sleep and breathe computers and DOS prompts

I wish I could do that, that'd be awsome. But for me the DOS prompt is simply slower than selecting multiple files at once and clicking delete or copy or whatever operation. Unless of course they all have the same extension, in which case it's easier to do:

I do a large amount of my work through a telnet session, so thats purely text based. That includes installing software, editing configuration files, transferring files between machines, viewing logs, writing software etc. There isn't an easy (and secure) GUI alternative.

It's been a long time since I've used dos for any sort of file operations, but linux, it's easier in some cases just to type:

cp /home/jerico2day/music/* /windows/music

Permissions specifically are a breeze:

Load up terminal

chown -Rv jerico2day:jerico2day /home/

vs

Load up file explorer
Find location
Right click > properties > permissions
Set permissions
Ok.

Seriously, way too much work

Takedown is a movie about the infamous hacker Kevin Mitnick. It may not be very accurate, the movie is based on a book which his opponent is one of the writers off. I've seen it years ago so I don't recall much.

Because all hackers use linux, which doesn't have mouse support.

Actually it does, but the Linux CLI (command line interface) is very nice and can do all kinds of neat stuff, so really you don't need a mouse.

I deal with systems for large travel companies. It's taking them decades to move away from conky green screen legacy systems to full blown mouse driven GUI systems mainly because they are slower to use. When a person gets used to repititious typing to get the same thing done then after a few years they are like a whirlwind at their job. I remember doing work experience when I was 17 and I was pretty much at my height at typing speed, getting near 100wpm consistently, which I thought was pretty good. But this one guy had worked in his job for like 10 years with the same conky system. He could load these job order forms (all he did all day long) in like no time. They were afraid he was going to leave and no way did they want to update the forms or system incase it slowed him down. I had a bit of a race with him and lost by miles...

Cheers

I am 99% probably lying in bed right now... so don't blame me for crappy typing

because you don't need amouse to use computers

Next time a game blocks your access to the desktop try Alt + Tab then arrow keys to change program

next time your firewall pops up during the middle of a game but you cant use your mouse to click the Accept button try Alt+A

Contrary to popular beliefs held by Ub3R L33tZ people under the age of 20-ish who think they are HaX0Rz, computers can be used w/o a mouse, and in many cases its much faster than using said device.

(Note the humor intended here)

Anyway, everyone has already covered it, but I still use the keyboard for most things, even 3D CAD modeling.
