Well, I think it's interesting. It's probably fake, but all legends have truth in them somewhere.
Windows Vista is SO BAD that places that sell PCs are starting to offer XP again. Good for them!
Windows 7 will hopefully be better, it's going to be released in the second half of '09 according to this article.
So has anyone else heard about this? If you have, please post links to the places you have, that would be interesting.
Well, what are you waiting for, click on it!

Maybe M$ are doing another WindowsME on us , i.e. release an OS so bad that they can't wait to replace it.

If it is a full release by 2009, and not a pre-release version, then I can't help but think of ME. You know, 98 with fancy clothes. And crap.

Still, if it sorts out some intermittent issues I have with Vista (even after SP2) then yay I guess. Note that if you have issues with copying large amounts of data and deleting stuff (locks up for long periods of time now and again, but rarer since SP2) then try Teracopy and Unlocker assistant (to stop stupid rogue processes keeping hold of files when all applications are clearly closed down). Well useful.

Cheers

Damn it Van B, I don't see any mention of ME on any gadget blog site and then you post it one minute before I do! Gawd!

BTW, I actually bought ME to upgrade 98. Yep, I was very very drunk at the time, and forgot to read reviews and the like...

More than likely, unfortunately. I think that if Bill Gates wants me to stick with PCs he ought to not make such horrible Operating Systems...Macs are starting to look so worth it anymore, except that they can't run DarkBASIC...

I would go Mac, but I was too cheap, so I went Linux (With XP for games.)

I hope Windows 7 is better.

My brother got a 24" Mac for free on my birthday They are pretty cool, but I'm too used to Windows now. I have XP and I personally don't have many problems with it. Never used Vista, and I don't really intend to unless I'm desperate

I've got it on my laptop, no bugs, but really confusing. It's like you have to be raised on it to learn the thing. If I find Vista confusing and at home at a Linux Shell, it's time for M$ to do some work.

Yeah, it looks very similar to XP, but for no good reason changes a lot of things around. Some buttons appear completely the other way around to XP for example. You know instead of save and cancel, you now get something like don't save and continue (or something like that). It's like grrrr.

And what is up with Office 2007? It's like lets get rid of a nice customisable interface (rocked on my 1600x1200 and 1920x1200 resolution screens) and have some pap that looks like fisher price, and takes ages to find anything. Grrrr2.... BTW, is there anyway to ditch ribbon and use standard menus? Gone are the good times of Word 97 (best Word ever as it didn't cock up like a blind waitress).

Cheers

I said this exact same thing several months ago and got flamed for it . I expect those who flamed me to hail me as a visionary ! lol but yeah, I totally agree, I think Vista was either designed as a transitional OS for the eventual migration to Windows 7, or they realize how crappy it is and are working their tails off to make their next OS better. Too many people are adamant about not giving up XP because of what they hear about Vista, and it's so bad that Dell and a few other computer companies have started offering XP again with brand new computers in fear that pre-installed Vista will hurt their sales. Either way, I think Vista will be remembered as ME-like .

Matt Rock: I may disagree I'am a owner of Vista I think it is a great OS, better than XP in my opinion. ME was a bad OS and in which can't compare to Vista. Matt Rock have you tried Vista? Out of intrest? As many people who own XP or Macs say Vista Sucks etc. and never have tried it.

Aye, I use vista as well. I personally think it's leaps and bounds better than xp. And I'll prolly use windows 7 exclusively as my windows os when it comes out.

Note: When I'm not playing games or using dbp, it's ubuntu all the way for me

i have to agree with Jerico and Deathead Vista is no where near as bad as ME, ME was nearly unusable, i've been using vista since it came out and they've updated it quite a bit and i haven't had a crash (that wasn't my fault) since ages

http://www.tweakguides.com/TGTC.html - The tweak guide for Vista is a good read for people that still insist Vista is just XP in fancy clothes as it details quite a few of the changes.

I honestly don't get what people are expecting from an upgrade to Windows. Of course its going to retain the feel of the versions before it, just like XP did and 98. It would be totally unreasonable to throw everything out and come up with a completely new design. Everyone would complain then. All they can do with each version of Windows is improve the underlying functionality, which is exactly what they did with Vista. It's a shame they had to hold back on a lot of what they had planned, and I expect that's why we might be seeing the next version of Windows much sooner.

As for me I'm skipping this round of Windows and will probably upgrade to Windows 7 after it gets its own SP1.

If Windows 7 is faster on my hardware, not on some immense leviathan with 8gb of DDR3 RAM than XP, I'll get it. Otherwise, I shan't bother as nothing is missing from XP I could need.

A shower sounds good, lol.

Yeah, I think that XP is good right now. I may buy a new computer from Dell and get XP on it, not Vista.

To the people who think we're nuts for hating Vista:

WE'VE DONE RESEARCH!!!

I, whenever I find a new software product, look it up ASAP.
It just makes sense to look up as many reviews as possible before making a decision, and so far 99 out of hundred reviews/rants about Vista have something about it constantly crashing or just how cruddy it is. My Aunt just bought a Vista laptop that keeps crashing every time she uses it!! She had almost 2 gigs of RAM, plenty of HD space, and I think a 3 GHz processor! That's a flippin' powerful laptop!
And it still always crashes on her, she's returning it and probably getting something with XP again, or a MAcBook or something. Bottom line: She HATES Vista. And she has every right too.

Well, I don't fancy buying an OS that will run my programs *slower* than they do with XP. This has been proven again and again. Just look at the system requirements on all modern games. The Vista requirements are much more than XP requirements. I'll stick with XP.

How do you know 3rd party software isn't causing the instabilities?

I can tolerate Vista's quirks ok now, but it still does some basic stuff horribly, which makes me scratch my head. I know SP1 was supposed to fix some stuff, but why in WORLD would copying and pasting make the computer hang? Isn't that like, something that should've been dealt with before release? I mean come on, what the hell?

Even after SP1, I still get long hang times when downloading files, where it gets stuck at the copying phase, sometimes for 30 seconds a time.

And why shuffle stuff around in the control panel just for the sake of change? For non-computer savvy people (like my parents), this is just insulting. Geez, it took them 5 years just to get comfortable making changes to stuff in XP, and now they have to relearn everything. Who thinks doing crap like that is a good idea?

God, never said is *was* ME, just that the situation seems quite ME like. Personally though I was leaning to the idea that 7 would be like ME (rushed out and basically is Vista with more bells and whistles to keep us happy) rather than Vista being ME.

As for the comment about using Vista at all before commenting, yep, used Ultimate for about 6 months. When it's working well then it is great. Then now and again I get a glitch. Don't forget I use this computer a lot. It's my main work computer and my main personal computer. And it gets a lot of different things to do. My main gripes (once I turned off the annoying UAP) is the sidebar now and again screws up (ok, so maybe 3rd party apps, but still total freezes and the like are well annoying) and general freezes for like 2 or 3 minutes here and there. Ok, normally it is doing something and if you let it go then it is fine after a while, but a bit of a notice that it is doing something would be nice. Plus even with SP1 large file handling (copying, deleting etc) especially over networks can be a bit of a hassle. It just sits there for like ages before deciding to do what you want, or after the amazingly long gap it tells you it can't do what you want. Nice. A few third party utilities help, but having to kill the process to stop windows (cancel doesn't do anything for minutes) is a bit much...

Oh and the best tip I've seen so far (apart from using Unlocker assistant) is for the start menu. Ever notice that it is a bit slow compared to XP? I mean you would use the All Programs option and your menu showing all your programs was quick as hell in XP, even with loads of installed stuff and sub-menus. Vista on the other hand tends to give you the "hourglass" for half a second, mainly on opening (even small) sub-menus. Well annoying. If you get into the configuration (can probably find again if you can't) and turn off the option to show new installations (where it highlights menu items when they are new) then it runs like magic! ie. like it should. Honestly who writes this stuff? Obviously the old XP menu writer got run over by a truck or left.

Cheers

Dell is selling each hw configuration with 2 base choices of OS - Vista, or XP. The XP boxes are more expensive, lol. That tells you which one is outselling which.

Am I the only person in the world who really doesn't care at all about what OS I am using?

Have Vista because it came preinstalled on this laptop, it's very pretty, and the Search is far superior, other than that it's Windows 95/98/XP.

The definitive review for ALL OSes:
- not worth upgrading
- not worth downgrading

Use whatever comes on your computer ffs.

Buy the cheapest OS, which is vista for some reason O.o

Vista works perfectly for me, no crashes, freezes or anything weird like that at all

Is it a dell? Or another branded laptop with useless buggy software installed... Its the software installed or incorrect drivers causing problems. My girlfriend just bought a laptop with vista installed and it runs absolutely perfectly. No crashes to date. 2.4Ghz dual core, 2gb ram too.

I installed vista on my old laptop which is a series older then that one she's got and it crashed like buggery because the laptop drivers were not correct, once completely updated it was fine. That one only has 1gb ram btw.

If you're talking about linux, I've used quite a few of those OS's since it's required for my course. They are good, I really liked using the CLIs and the fact that everything was customisable. I wouldn't call them user friendly though.

None of them worked for my laptop which was really annoying, I've tried redhat, ubuntu and slackware. All crash at startup lol, works fine on my desktop though but wanted it on my laptop so I could work in the labs at uni. NONE of their lab computers work, they are 10 year old dying computers with slackware installed.

I'm talking about Windows OS's For some reason Vista home premium is cheaper than windows xp home O.o I get windows for free so I'm not complaining yet

Quote: "well i have heard that Vista needs 2gb of ram by its self"

It uses some sort of memory management where programs you use a lot are loaded into memory or something so they load faster. Its actually in my opinion better at memory management than XP. I've even had vista usable on a PC with 512mb RAM. Of course if you hate it that much you can turn it off, just like everything else

Im happy with XP, it works and cant be bothered with formating and having to reinstall all my programmes.

Dont fix it unless its broken, thats what id say, only reason i'd upgrade is to get a 64Bit OS, but my old 32Bit XP works fine.

lol...sorry, didn't mean to come by in a rude fashion. I agree with you Deathead, you have to try it out yourself before you decide. It's just that Vista is still pretty expensive ($250 I think) and after all of the reviews I've read that say it's horribly annoyingly slow, I just don't think it's worth it. I've read reviews that have said that it runs great on their system. But usually those guys have spent more money for a lot more power in their system, which isn't a bad plan at all, unless you're on a budget....

Quote: "well i have heard that Vista needs 2gb of ram by its self"

Yep, I've heard that too. However I think that is just a rumor.

Quote: "A pure Windows install, or one from a computer manufacturer that comes with stuff pre-installed?"

Pre-installed, so it probably does have some third-party software on it somewhere. I also remembered last night (but didn't have time to go post about it) that she said that she bought anti-virus software for it and installed it right after she turned it on for the first time....hmmm.....I forget what it was called though, otherwise I'd give the name.

Here is some more news about Windows 7 ( I think that's it's codename, I hope it's not actually called that ).

Here's another interesting article

Here's another

This is interesting, it sounds like a feature request!

There are a lot more articles that sound interesting, but I think I'll let you all see these first.

And if you feel like it, you can just google 'Windows 7'. That's where I got all of these articles from.

Same boat here. I might wipe the disk and put Linux on it, but I didn't say everyone should. If you like/dislike Vista, then use/don't use it.

You can buy an OEM version of Vista Home Premium for under $110.

My system is currently dual booting Vista Home Premium, and I replaced my XP Partition for an Ubuntu install. Vista works just fine for me, and after the improvements they've included in the OS, I find it hard to go back to XP. Also, recently, SP1 was released, which I can recommend to anyone who has their drivers updated (as people using outdated drivers was generally the cause for SP1 bricking machines if I recall correctly).

The only problem with Vista is probably transfering large files over a LAN. But as I don't generally have a need to do that in my homes network, it's not much of a bother for me.

But I admit, Windows 7 is a bit of a curiosity for me. If Vista is the ME this time around, I'd love to see what they could pump out for Vista 7.

I can recommend a Vista system have 2GB of memory in it. However, Vista runs just fine with only 1GB of RAM, even for gamers (except when Crysis is involved, but Crysis is a special beastie).

RAM is cheap (unless you're stuck in the stone age, like me, with DDR1 RAM, or want the latest and greatest with DDR3), and a stick of DDR2-800 goes for $20. I would say the extra $20 would be a fair deal for the performance upgrade, but if you're cheap enough to not warrant buying additional RAM, 1GB works just fine.

Yeah, lots of people are saying that since MicroSoft is already announcing their next OS that that means Vista is the ME of the mid 00's. BTW, completely un-related, but what the heck is the name of our decade? The 90's were the 90's, so is this just the 2000's or the otties? (Zeros used to be called 'Ott', so that would make this the otties, I think..) Sorry for the unrelated question...let's stick to the already posted topic....*slinks away*

In the UK it has sort of unofficially been names the naughties. God... Now just realise how old you will be until once again you can have a proper named decade. Cry...
