What is all this fuss about Vista sucks or rocks? I do not get it. It is an OS with good sides and bad sides, just like every other. If I hate it (I do not, I think it is an decent OS), I have the right to. If I love it, I have the right to. Bottom line, we are different. It is only natural we like different OSs. I for one love Ubuntu. But I do not attack everyone that does not. It is their view.


And about Windows 7, I read it will have an requirement of an quad core. Do not know if it is true, though...

Vista works fine here too. I love how all my games go into a Game directory thing saves me having the hassel of sorting it out myself

I feel like as someone who's used (at some point) many of the major operating system class out there, I've got a fair amount of perspective. I'll admit I haven't spent any real time with vista yet. However, I live with a full time vista user (my father). And you would not believe the amount of complaints that come out of him... Vista can't see the shares on the XP machine. At one point we'd resorted to NET USE on the command line to connect. Ugh. He's got slowdown complaints, he complains about the massive amounts of ram it requires to run. When he first got a copy and tried to install it on an old machine and it told him he needed 512 mb, his response was basically 'oh god, what are they thinking?' That was an RC, so he thought they had DRM in the kernel. And lo and behold, vista requires that much right now...
And then there are the drivers. Those of you who aren't having driver problems, you're a vocal minority. I mean it. Every computer Dell ships has drivers with problems. Hint: Dell customers cannot get SP1 because the built-in sound card does not have updated drivers. Plus, there are other issues and plenty of unstable drivers (who saw the slashdot story about vista crashes?).
I started on windows 3.1 really early in my life, and have really used windows up to about 4 years ago when I switched to the mac. I still stay fairly familiar with windows, but have refused to touch vista so far, just because of what I see while my father is computing. My mac has been kind to me so far, and I'd keep on using it if it were just a bit cheaper (the disadvantage of closed hardware).
Ive also spent a significant amount of time on unix (openbsd, mostly CLI), and I'm thinking of moving over to that full time, because I like the security and stability of it, as well as the freeness of everything. Haven't spent much time on linux (yet), but from what I've seen its not too different from unix. Its top on my list of OSs to play with.

Oh, and for those of you thinking of switching to linux/unix: check out the WINE project. It lets you run windows exes on linux/unix. Very useful. Works on the new macs as well.

Conclusion: Other operating systems are more stable then windows, and some of those are cheaper. Because of the complaints I hear from the vista user I live with (and some of the stupid problems I've managed to fix), I'm convinced its just not ready, and I won't be using it for a while.

Sorry but that should not happen, infact it is easier for you to setup sharing. Vista can read shared files and folders perfectly from xp(and vista) I have had no problems at all, didn't have to use any work arounds, just had to select the folder and allow the sharing. Of course you have to allow access through the firewall too, but you have to do that with everything if you have a good one...

Using XP to XP I've had NOTHING but trouble, every time I try to connect to another xp machine like my laptop I get "sorry you don't have permission to access this computer" and it takes an hour of messing around to get the thing to work, then after I reset the computer I gotta go through the entire process AGAIN. With Vista it took 2 seconds to set it up and it keeps on working.

£30 for 2gb of DDR 2 8000 ram. 256mb is a bit crap, I wouldn't even install XP on it. Maybe linux or win2000 or less.

Vista uses all the ram available since it thinks free memory is a waste so it loads programs you use a lot of so it takes less time to load. You can turn if off if you hate it so much There should be a way to turn off DRM. I don't think I have it because I'm on Business ed. If you have over 256mb of memory it should work as smoothly as XP.

Thats more to do with the developers of the drivers than Vista, however I have found XP drivers to work better than the Vista drivers some developers release. Try it, its kinda funny I have XP drivers installed for my wireless pen drive as the vista one crashed too much O.o

I think your major problem is with Dell and not Vista, if you do have a dell computer. My brother bought a dell with vista and has pretty much the same problems you've been having. We threw it back in dell's face and bought a PC that was actually worth our time in the end

That's because Vista is more secure and asks for a username and password. You can use XP shares but you have to enter username=guest and password=<leave it blank!> Even windows 98 was more secure than that!

It will run on 512mb but 2Gb in 2x1Gb running Dual Channel is recommended.

Vista 32bit will run most XP drivers fine. 64bit is another kettle of fish. Best to install Vista when you get a new PC rather than an upgrade on an old one in my opinion.

I'd like to use a none M$ OS but if your a game head there is little else for a PC. One day M$ maybe forced to share DX with other OS if the EU has it's way.

Not completely correct. Anybody looking to see how much ram Vista uses will probably see Vista using all of it, no matter what system you're on. That's because Vista fills up any ram that your applications aren't using with its own preloaded stuff. The principle behind this is that unused ram is wasted ram- it still gets wear and tear, but you get no use out of it. If you aren't using the ram for a program then Vista will fill it up with pre-loaded stuff. That way there is at least a chance of you using the ram, however unlikely. Vista does use about 200-250mb (I don't know the exact number) before starting to use the extra ram.

Couldn't have said it better myself, at least the EU is trying to do one good thing!

It seems that with each release of Win that you spend more and more time trying to un-dumbify (yes its a word because I say so :p) the stinking OS so you can use it like a person who isn't computer ignorant and/or likes pretty interfaces. Every time I log onto a computer at work I've never logged onto before, I spend about ten minutes reverting everything back to the least dumbified I can - turn all the pretties off, put all the icons and start menus like they *should* be, etc.

I'm not holding my breath for Win 7, and didn't hold my breath for Vista - I'm keeping the defenses up until I'm all but forced to upgrade.

At least there's still support for using the computer without a mouse, I'm just wondering when they'll do away with that and force everyone to use the mouse for tasks which keyboard shortcuts are faster (which is a good majority of things). Even a lot of things in CAD-like programs are faster to just type in rather than click all over creation and squint at the screen to get everything sized/aligned properly. *wishes MS3D had a command interface instead of just mouse commands*

Meh, live with DOS only! Those were the days. When Windows was a poxy file explorer and nobody used it, and mice were used in Fleet street editor and CAD and thats about it. Ahhhhh.... those were the days... And Falcon on a CGA setup (in 4 colours I believe) was the mutts nuts (for an IBM compat PC). Anyone remember sim-cga? Carried that bloody everywhere... Ran like a dog but at least you could get green (and orange) screen hurcules efforts to plod along with your favourite game

Most apps indeed run quite good, shame that DirectX implementation is all but finished. Games & DirectX are usually limited or crippled. It's the only reason I still run a Vista partation.

Win7 is using Vista as a starting point. I think that pretty much spells doom for it.

If they still haven't fixed the flaws in Vista, then they're bound to reappear in win7; because let's face it, if they could/can fix some of the small problems with Vista post-launch, they would have included the fixes in SP1. They didn't.

Problems, you ask? Well, I still have big I/O problems, running Vista SP1 w/2GB RAM and a 500GB Seagate HD. The I/O is just so damn slow for copying data from drive to drive etc. it's horrid. The only reason I'm sticking with Vista, is because it has the only decent media tool which works with my DVB TV Tuner (although Media Centre itself still sucks).

So yeah; if the basic problems in Vista persist onwards into win7 (which presumably they will, because win7 is being based upon Vista by the looks of the preview builds) then you can count me out. Vista does some good stuff, but the "meat" of it seems very badly messed up.
