As you can see when reading the name of this thread, I've got some questions about huds.

Can you only use tga files or also jpg?

thanks for helping!

and how do I tell the computer where the hud has to be transpaent?

The best idea would be to use .DDS files for HUDs, and have a copy of it in .TGA aswell (just in the same folder).

This is because when I tried to use a .TGA file on its own (without a .DDS in the folder), the preview game crashed.

Also, for the transparency, it would be easier to just make the HUD the right size, so that the canvas in your editing programis about the same size as the actual image.
Then, you have to fiddle around with X and Y positions, although I don't remember where! (Anyone know?)

Use GIMP. Very easy tool to create HUDS and transparent HUDS at that. I actually use PNG. You don't have to create the DDS as FPSC creates it automatically. When creating a new file (make sure you are using the text tool (the icon is "A") you will select "transparency" as the background in the advanced feature. Also, you will want to make sure that the foreground is white and the background is black.

You can get GIMP here. It's free.

You can use a lot of image formats.

The best formats would be ones that naturally support transparency (PNG is the one I like to use) as that will be transparent in FPSC. If you don't have that, then you can do what I do when I'm away from a good image editting software:

Use Paint, make the transparent portions pure black, and save as a BMP. FPSC will load it in and make all the black portions transparent.

Also, when you load a HUD into FPSC, it will create a .DDS file for it automatically since those load faster than other formats.
