Allegro is a VERY nice library set for C++ I just discovered recently (thanx Twizter ) and can create very fast 2D games.

http://www.allegro.cc has some games made, for examples.

For those who use C++ here & DarkBASIC, which would YOU use? (and why?)

Allegro is only good for 2D stuff, which is so 1990's...

Good news everyone! I really am THAT good...

Actually, there is an addon library to allow Allegro to use OpenGL based imaging. So it is a viable alternative to writing games, and it's also cross-platform compatible.

An alternative is the SDL library aswell. http://www.libsdl.org

Not advertising but my site contains a game I did using Allegro WIP, before the v4.01 release. http://www.apexnow.co.uk

Allegro is not good for just 2D stuff!...They are thinking of making an Allegro Console System, hehe..beat that DB..j/k I really like DB.

Allegro actually *can* do 3D graphics, but..hah..not as well DarkBASIC.

*sigh* I'm for sum reason been doing all my work in C++ w/ Allegro now..i'm drifting from DB..Ah what the heck..rich doesn't care, he probably still gets money! hehe

Darkbasic hands down.
Allegro is for people like me two years ago who went virtually insane trying to understand COM objects in order to upload a DirectX surface using C. The insanity came on right after being bombarded by the endless heaps of Windows SDK functions that made me sick.

If you ask me, the only place left for 2d'ers is handhelds, not computers. I love hexidecimal programming on a calculator, and 2d is standard on all gameboys, but we have to learn that pacman isn't cool anymore

I tend to agree: 90%.

One way 2D remains alive is in 3D presentation. Just take a good look at Contra: Shattered Soldier for the PS2 and tell me that you would rather play it totally 3D.
Did I mention they are doing the same thing with R-Type: Final for the PS2: keeping the 2D gameplay in 3D space.

Don't get me started about the cult that keeps alive 2D fighting games:
Guilty Gear series, Capcom vs. SNK 2, Marvel vs. Capcom,

I'm beginnning to get into the habit of underlining game titles (I don't know why). If it is annoying please tell me and I will stop on the spot, that is, after 3 different people complain.

shame about allegros keyboard input routines/ sound management and networking.

its not bad but its not as fine tuned as what you could acheive inside DB with half the hair loss

Lol.

Free Lunch Designs has some *great* games. 3 of them are crappy, the 4th version of one is EXCELLENT (mario clone almost, except Alex the Allegator), and another is as much fun (Icy Towers).

I wonder what it would be like to create AllegroBASIC lol..hmm..compitition LOL..
