Hi all,

We've been working hard on this new application for the Google Android challenge. We submitted it today and here's a video about it;

It looks a bit too simple to be any fun. For kids maybe, those not spoiled by console games.

Are these games all there by default, or can the thing load and play exes, or perhaps maybe scripted games?

Looks nice anyway

Don't you just hate that Zotoaster guy?

I saw it and thought, pretty cool I guess, but then figured out it was on a phone! Wow! I hope you win, it looks great!

For a mobile phone platform it's more impressive. But judging from the video it still seems too simple, kinda like T3DGM. The creator of the game does not seem to have much control over the final game. However, games for mobiles still suck most of the time so it may work on that market, but people tend not to play much on phones these days.

I believe it is just a proof-of-concept version. You can only do so much in a limited amount of time!

I thought the way the prototype was laid out indicated that it would be quite simple. Each of the features listed in the end does not really change anything if the software lacks depth. Will be interesting to see where you will take this project, if you are one of the winners. Good luck

I took a little time to look at the Android project and I really like it. Sony, Ericsson and Nokia are not memebers, sadly not a surprise. It would have been fun to participate in the developer challenge but I don't know any Java.

Nobody in their right mind makes a Tetris Clone. It's the most disputed game in history, as far as intellectual rights are concerned.

You couldn't be further from the truth! I know it's quite hard to accept when you look at the quality of lots of mobile games, but the mobile game industry is absolutely massive. We're talking $$ billions $$ per year.

One company alone (www.zed.com) pushed out games to 160 million people last year (which is probably why they alone turned over half a billion $ in 2007, $100 million of which was pure profit).

Trust me - it's way bigger than you realise! the Android Game Creator is just a 3 month prototype to enter in the Google competition, and if they win they'll go into the next round and get to update it further. Yes it will be T3DGMish in nature, but this is a Ravey built project, so expect some seriously good hardcore retro gaming action possible from it

For a market like this: "nearly 3 billion people have a mobile phone" 160 million people is not that huge, and it's not a single game we're talking about here. According to a list of best selling video games on Wikipedia only 5 mobile games have ever sold over a million games (The Sims alone have sold 50+):

Quote: "
* Block Breaker Deluxe (8 million)
* Brain Challenge (1.5 million)
* Bubble Bash (1 million)
* Coin Stack 2600 (1 million in Korea)
* Doom RPG (1 million)"

[/quote]

Most mobile phones today are not made to play games on and most mobile games are not really made to be played on phones. Phones today have a lot of cool features like cameras and MP3 capability, this is what most people are interested in using their phones for after communication. People who want to play on the go get a DS or PSP.

How exactly did you come to that conclusion? Considering the vast majority of the 6 billion people on the planet live in 3rd world countries with not a lot of mobile infrastructure, and there's plenty of people (mainly very young and older people) in developed countries that don't have phones.

The number of people is probably not accurate. There may be 3 billion phones, but many people have 2 phones (work and home), and younger people tend to have many registered phones, even though they only use the latest one. I have 5 or 6 in a box from over the years. Also, work phones tend not to be used for games.

It's like talking about "computers", where the largest percentage of computers are in an office, are a server or a mainframe.

Kentaree:
Sorry, that's a quote from the Open Handset Alliance web page. That's why I got the quotation marks there

According to this site Informa (who looks into these things) reported that there where 2.7 billion subscribers by the end of 2006. Over 0.9 billion phones where sold in 2006. Almost 30% of the worlds population had 2 but the bottom line is: "Informa tells us that the unique populatoin of mobile phone users was 2.1 billion at the end of 2006." This is more then 15 months ago.

It has an interesting breakdown of the numbers - some countries have 1.25 phones per person, including babies and children!

Quote: "Informa also tells us that out of all mobile phone users, 28.8% have two or more subscription (and in most cases this also means two phones). Obviously in countries like Italy, Taiwan, Hong Kong, UK etc where mobile phone penetration is at over 125% per capita, the proportion of phone owners to have two or more phones is near 40%. But even across Europe, now well over a third of the population who have a phone, have in fact at least two subscriptions and mostly also thus two phones."

Yeah, since 40% of the population have 2 or more subscriptions it's not weird that it vastly exceeds 100%.

It kinda looks like an Imitation to the IPhone. I am a big fan of mobile gaming, It would be great if somebody could offer a game creator for Symbian S60 phones. But I will keep an eye on this, dose look neat.

I think this has potential, but the player needs to actually have a say in building the levels. FOr example: the breakout game. Let the player set ball speed, power up properties, brick layout, time limit, etc.

Pretty good stuff for a mobile, though.

sound like europress click & play

Is it Java based? A JAVA based game creator for use on any phone or Linux/PC/Mac would be nice

DinoHunter (still no nVidia compo voucher!), CPU/GPU Benchmark, DarkFish Encryption DLL, War MMOG (WIP), 3D Model Viewer

ive seen some 3D stuff running very well on android
a google employee was playing Quake on it!
will the game creator have 3D?
will there be an article in the newsletter?

It is far better to complete a 10 line program than to start a 10,000 line program.
