Go into explorer, and hit tools menu (press ALT in Vista) then select folder options. Then hit view tab and untick the hide extensions for known file types tickbox.

Cheers

I am 99% probably lying in bed right now... so don't blame me for crappy typing

In XP

- Open any folder.
- Click Tools->Folder Options...
- Click the View tab.
- Uncheck Hide extensions for known file types
- Apply and OK--- done

EDIT:

Dazzag beat me to the punch!
