This is a response to Cattle Rustlers build. My New Rig

This is my quad server built mainly from ebay parts. It's been designed for running cool, quiet and on low power. I've not had chance to install any software or drivers yet but early idle test show 100watts which is 20 watts less than my duo systems!

-Intel Core 2 Quad 9300
-Energy Max 82% rated PSU (they claim 88% efficency max)
-Gigabyte EP Motherboard (they recon it's 50% more efficient than normal MB)
-Sycth Ninja B Fanless Heatsink (there is a fan but it's for backup)
-Gigabyte nVidia 8600GTS Fanless (should be a 9600GT but the one i want is out of stock ATM)
-4Gb of Dual Channel Corsair 800Mhz RAM (with room to upgrade to 8Gb)
-2 x Western Digital 320Gb RE2 HDDs in RAID0 (640Gb @ 14000 rpm faster than a single Raptor)
- Windows Vista Prem 64 bit (its gona be a media center as well as a game, web, print and file server!)

If anyone in the UK is interested in a cheap fanless 8600GTS I'll be getting rid of this soon. I bought it for a girl but she don't want it in her PC because "it looks ugly"

380 watts. My build is not designed to exceed 200 watts, not tried all cores at 100% to see if it's true yet, but early idle tests of 100w look promising.

I'd have liked a Zen Fanless PSU but couldn't stretch the budget to a £100 PSU and couldn't find one on ebay. This has a temp controlled fan so is pretty noisless

Maybe I'm being stupid, but if its going to be a server why do you need a high end graphics card like a 9600 in it?

Looks sweet, that's one big heat sink on the CPU.

Wish I had enough money to build myself a new comp, but got to save for a car and somewhere to live.

It will get used for gaming and TIVO/PVR. I always planned for a 9600 as it seems the best watts/price/GPU ratio.

I was surprised to find expensive EP motherboards don't come with onboard graphics! So had to go on the scrounge for the 8600 after scan failed to deliver the 9600 and my DualTV card.

I've just go the internet working and downloading nVidia drivers now. Watts used are 96. When i ran the Windows rating test it fired up all 4 cores togther and it hit about 160watts. But my graphics score is 1.0 and can't run Aero so looks like I got a driver issue or this power saving is messing up my graphics somehow

I just ran HDTach to test out the raid config... very happy

2x WD RE2 320Gb(640Gb Total) = average speed 103.6 MB/s
1x WD Raptor 150Gb (same price or more with a quater of the storage!) = average speed 75.5 MB/s
My other Core 2 Duos with various 250Gb SATA2 drives = 40 MB/S

That is a great machine.

It is. I can say that because I have one. I need to see how well it will play with OpenGL3 - if it will, but I find it the best one for development so far.

They have a girly coolers now, i'm sure she would like this...

I found a pretty 9600 graphics card too

I dunno I watch too much youtube

We was arguing which was better q6600 or q9300 and I said you should wait a week or two for the new one as it used less power.

You've also thrown down the gauntlet with a 3dmark06 score but I'll need my 9600gt to have any chance against your 8800gt

btw, your cpu runs at 95w, the q6600 runs at 65w.
your cpu is 1333fsb, but you are using ddr2 800 ? can the ram/mobo support 1066 or 1333?

and now I get the email from newegg: "the e8400 cpu is now back in stock!" - pff, lol. I actually prefer the quad, I'll just overclock it to 3ghz

My mobo supports 1200 max officially. The reason i chose 800Mhz memory is that it's cheap and if running in dual channel mode (2x800=1600 a bit like RAID) it would easily fill the 1333 bus. I was concidering 667 memory but couldn't find a branded 2Gb and those I found were no cheaper than 800 2Gb sticks.

Quote: "btw, your cpu runs at 95w, the q6600 runs at 65w."

i think that's the other way around, those are max watts of the socket not the true draw of the CPU.

Mr Makealotofsmoke, It's designed to do everything. If it was just for gaming I'd have gone for a e8400 3Ghz but I thought the chances for maxing out 2 cores with everything i want it to do was high so went for a quad instead. In an ideal world I'd have 2x e8400 servers but the chances of leaving 2 computers on and getting killed by the the person who pays the electricity bill were high!

If anyone remembers my WarMMOG I was actualy moving everyones tank on the server to make cheating impossible this required some graphics. My mobo doesn't have onboard VGA so i had to stick a graphics card in so why not a half decent one that is low power.

It will be running 24x7x365 hense my obsession with power saving. Now I've got my motherboard drivers installed now and I'm seeing idle usage as 85w.
