My mouse suddenly stopped working yesterday evening. Obviously I figured it was a problem with the mouse, but after testing several others I've eliminated that possibility. It seems that Windows isn't even detecting the mouse. In fact, I had to navigate to this page with Mousekeys because I'm terrible at hotkeys. So ya, any idea what's wrong?

Is this a PS/2 or USB type mouse?

USB. I know it's not a problem with the USB slots though 'cause I can still plug in my iPod fine.

Hmm did you recently update your PC? Could be a problem with Drivers...?

are you using any converters (usb to ps2, or ps2 to usb)? those things are unreliable. also check the setting for that usb block related to power, uncheck the box that says "Let windows turn off this device to save power". Windows doesnt always do this correctly and could shut your device down when it wasnt supposed to.

When you say it doesnt work, do you mean it isnt showing up or it's not responding?

AaronG: Not that I know of, unless my brother did something.

CattleRustler: Nope, no converters. And the USB port isn't blocked either, infact it makes the little sound that Windows always makes for me when I plug stuff in via USB.

ZekeGames: It isn't showing up and isn't responding.

please read what I said, I said check that usb "block" (node, lisitem, whatever) in device manager (view by connection) and find the usb hub the mouse is on. In there check the properties of that root hub and uncheck the field I mentioned, if its checked

CattleRustler:

I just checked and the field was already unchecked. I've also confirmed that the mouse works on other computers.

ok, because I just had this same issue on my new machine - all machines prior used ps/2. for me it turned out to be the converter but I also unchecked that box for the usb hub my mouse and keyboard show up on. dont need it shutting off in the middle of a fierce tf2 battle or something equally bad.

Ugghh, okay, now the device manager says that an unknown device (my mouse) has been inserted into a rear USB port; it says it can't be recognized because I haven't installed any drivers for it, but I have several times.
