Yesterday I was at a grocery store near my house called "Tops", and I was paying the cashier, when we started talking about computers. We then started talking about spyware and stuff. She looked very young, like 20's. I was shocked what she said.

Lady: "My Windows computer has been running so slow lately"
Me: "Have you been running spyware/virus removal software?"
Lady: "What?"
Me: "Have you been getting ride of the Spyware? Have you been defragging your computer?"
Lady: "What's spyware? What's defragging?"
Me: "Its what slows down your computer. Have you been getting ride of it?"
Lady: "Well, no. I have never heard of spyware."
Me: "What do you do when your computer starts to slow down?"
Lady: "Oh, I just toss it, and buy a new computer every year."

I was so shocked Lol.

I would have got her number and told her to sell me her computers when she was done with them. I could fix them up and sell them for more!

Yeah... don't you wish you could just tell customers like that to unplug everything and bring it back to the store? Lol.

I would have gotten her number because shes rich!

Did you kindly offer to go to her house and teach her the ways of the "right way people"?

Oh dear, well I suppose not everybody is computer healthy, though I would have thought she would have got a technical guy to look at it (based on her lack of computer knowledge) - as it is cheaper than buying a new computer, then she would have learned about Spyware.

Though people like her are easy victims for fraud, after all her bank details are...

Just kidding, but you should have slapped her in the face and said you fool! Mind you my sister, she knows about spyware, yet refuses to listen to me and doesn't want to remove them, despite the potential harm, then goes on the Mac saying "I don't wanna use my computer because it's crap and annoying." (The annoyance partially being the 'you have spyware' warnings)

I do something similar, whenever the battery runs out on my laptop I just buy a new one making sure it's fully charged beforehand

Much good work is lost for the lack of a little more.

A while back, I recovered a computer and installed Norton AV for a customer. A few days later, the computer was back in the shop with a virus. When I checked the browser history, downloaded files, when certain programs were installed, etc... I was able to trace the problem to something she had downloaded.

As I began to delve into the problem with the customer, this is basically what she relayed to me:

"I was trying to download a screensaver and Norton kept blocking it, saying that it was infected, so I turned Norton off."

You gotta' love it!

Best.

I need to stop reading thread titles when I'm half asleep. I thought you meant you went to the grocery store and the cashier was a talking computer... I was like "uh... we've had automated checkout lines for like, what, six years now?"

...That's exactly what I first thought.

And don't get me started on tech support Xplosys! I've heard of some really stupid users who just won't listen to the techs.

'tis what I thought too.

It's amazing the ignorance of some people. I'd have definitely offered to go and help her out and teach her how PCs work ^_^

Well they do have those. Much faster than waiting for a normal cashier, as long as there aren't a bunch of idiots in line for it who have no clue and stumble through scanning/paying.

Lol @ xplosys.

Try explaining that a wireless router in fact, requires a power cord and a signal input cord...

It's easy to rag on non-computer users. But this whole situation gets reversed when I take my car into the shop...

"And can you check the oil, I think I've been checking the transmission fluid instead by accident..."

"Fair enough"

Cars? People should know the basics of cars, just like computers.

Now sports - useless in life so why bother?

SportsCars however.....ahhh the joy of motoring in a T-top sportscar!

Was she hot? If so this is why we have random "girlfriend" threads...

Next time you see her ask her if shes had any luck getting her computer to run faster. if she hasn't yet bought a new one, offer to help her out, and give her your number! If she calls you go over and help her out. If she offers you money for your help DONT TAKE IT (Keep it a friendly gesture instead of making it business). As you are fixing her computer and explaining to her how to do everything on her own just get into some friendly chit chat. If all works out you have a new "Friend". Then you can start going over for reasons not computer related :p
