@ sonicboom

sorry, but probably my computer run the game in a different way.
Cars have a too slow accelleration and crash are TOOOOO long!
speed of game is about 20 fps it seems, with half car, full car, sky or not sky.
Physics of the car is a bit strange, never turn, it change angle and slide...

maybe my pc is a wreck one, i think.

@ sonicboom:
wow ! that is pretty good for DB! great game! however, there seems to be an interesting small performace issue. i have a 2.4ghz p4 with 512 ram and a geforce4Ti4600 but when i corner, sometimes the fps is reduced to low digits like 15fps! but anyway, u thinking of a sequel ?

@dragontail: thanks

To cure any slowdown (on your 2.4ghz!!) you could try increasing the Camera Draw value (in the options menu) to 1 or even 2, which will decrease the draw distance (by default it draws for miles and miles).

@eek: LOL! yeah, one or two places you can do that I found.

Is the ADW time for track one (Florida Raceway) unbeatable or what?? 173.576 seconds total time, he broke the sound barrier?? I've not given up trying yet tho

Ok well I don't live there but used to visit as a kid.

I'm happy to report that Dreamland IS still alive and kicking, in summer at least and hosts such delights as the deluxe sitdown version of Virtua Racing & 8 player link up Daytona USA!

For a bit of fun and to entice you to beat track 1 how about a few pics to jog your memory?

Downloaded and played. The first race is very hard, I can't beat it yet or get past near the 6th lap, I keep running out of time.

The music is great, and very well done and placed.

Graphics are a little iffy, but for a non-commercial project they're great. And it's a very fast paced game, but the car spin off track into air physics are a little lengthy and drawn out, and the matrix spin is just weird after the 11th flip.

But it's a great game.

Thnx guys

Its been out a while now but I'm stil interested in the downloads it gets & the hits to the web site in general.

I'm not sure how many downloads I could expect for a game like this but I'm pleased to announce its now more than 3000 (fanfare!) lol

There are approx 600 downloads a month lately. In truth though - I'm not really sure if that's good or bad. I think probably pretty good for a file of this size?

The downloads VR has had seem to be mainly due to the DarkBASIC Newsletter (July 2003 issue) and featuring on sites such as http://games.softpedia.com/, http://www.gametunnel.com, http://www.indiegamer.com and just recently http://www.techtree.com plus of course the initial enthusiasm for testing at release time by the guys here

The leaderboard doesn't seem to reflect 3000 ppl playing the game alot but that could be because ppl find it hard & give up or just don't realize they can merge their scores as its kinda tucked away in the options menu. Or maybe they just think its crap! lol. Even if someone really liked it, I wouldn't imagine anyone playing the game for more than a few hours total anyway - its just not that deep!

Still, I'm proud of the game and very pleased at the interest & support it has had so far - long may it continue!

Very impressive game you have there! TGC should be paying you to use this title as a selling tool for their product. It's seeing results like this that gives us all hope!

Thanks CattleR and I look forward to seeing your WIP young Padawan

As it happens, CR, I was asked by the German Publishers for DBPro if they could use screenies on the box art and I agreed. I don't know if they ever did use any or not.

Does anyone know?

Yep, quality title. Good work on this one. Any chance of you working on a version with a physics engine instead of the arcade style? Would rock.

Good work.

One day I will write a sequel to this but when that will be....?

In my mind, the sequel would have full 3D tracks, jumps & decent (but perhaps exagerated) car physics. Soundtrack could be Daytona USA 2001 (Dreamcast version). One of the Alienware compo entries looks like a similar sorta thing (the one with the alien in the buggy).

Unfortunately I'm currently working on other things (my own C++ game engine) and have no immediate plans for any DB coding.

The goal, I guess, is to write the above using my own code.

If you do a second version, stick with the daytona theme, but make it your own, so it's not copyright. I'd be happy to do music and sound fx for you.

Anyway, good luck with the other projects.

Yeah I know I broke alot of music copyright, a couple of images (Sonic the Hedgehog on THAT wall & also on the cars themselves) in the first game but heck I know nothing about creating music for games and it was all for free so, what the hell. I've never had a cease and desist from Sega and I don't suppose I'm likely to, its not a porno version of Golden Axe or anything! lol

Plus of course the game is all for free, not like I'm making money out of it. It was a fun project and I'm no more breaking the law than any of the web sites out their with company logos splashed all over the shop offering game/music downloads etc.

Having said that, I'm not a fan of law breaking and would state that it is far more noble to present original ideas and content than ride on the back of well know or successful franchises.

So I'll bear your kind offer in mind. Thank you Do you have any example work I could listen to?

Yeah, you won't get in trouble, and personally, I have no probs with what you've done. In fact, it's very nostalgic to hear "Please select manual or automatic transmission". Reminds me of sitting in those daytona arcade games. I could never afford to play them that often, so I never got good enough to select manual transmission! Only reason why I mentioned the copyright is for your own personal accomplishment. I'm just guessing it would be more satisfying to bash your next project out as a 100% original personalised Sonic masterpiece. hehe

All my music can be downloaded from http://www.breakbeat-terrorism.co.uk That mine and Scienide's site, so any tracks by Fallout are mine.

If you want a direct link to some of my tracks try:
Preying Mantis http://www.kontact-kru.com/Fallout-PreyingMantis.mp3 (A good example of pace and melody)
Scimitar http://www.kontact-kru.com/Fallout-Scimitar.mp3 (A good example of atmospheric pace, and melody)
Hesitate http://www.kontact-kru.com/Fallout-Hesitate.mp3 (A vocal track, showing I have a female vocalist to help me out too).

If you take into account that I've synthesised most of the sounds in that music myself, then you can see sound FX aren't a problem. I'm also in the process of investing in some recording kit, so I'll be able to get out and actually record some real life car sounds / fx too, with a little help from some mates with fast cars.

That sorta style should suit driving music. Let me know if you ever get down to a new racer project and I'll be glad to help.

Mates with fast cars, heheheh, yeah I must admit I invested a ton of cash in a massive new exhaust for my pride & joy Toyota MR2 Mk 2 Turbo. Whoooooooooossshhh goes the dump valve!! Grrrrrrr said the exhaust note! lol!

Same as with the Daytona experience, I could only afford a few goes on that when the opportunity arose, and no never got to use Manual either. I'm a wizz on it now tho - I have Daytona 2001 on Dreamcast and it totally rocks!

Did you ever play the orginal Need for speed? - it had a music track they just called "Ayeeeyaaa" or somthing. I loved that track and I'm listening to your female vocal track and its reminded me of it - could definately picture some racing action to a track like that!

Nice work, I hope you find some racing games to work on soon!
