I was playing Frontline: fuel of war on singleplayer when my:
Tower
Creative EAX
ATI X1650
2.20GHZ
2Gb Ram
Amd athalon 64 prosessor 3700+
Service pack 2 (XP)

rebooted, the motherboard complained that it had a wiring error

when i realised that it was not working I checked the soundcontrols in options and windows had no sound card available

I rebooted and it did not work with same complaint from motherboard.

I will go and get the complaint.

in the meantime see what you can do

oh, i blame my cat for rubbing up on a usb that has been in my pc for 2 days ish. (it rebooted almost as she left

Sounds like your sound card is either dead or come lose from the PCI slot.

are you cross-matching an IntelHD with an AC97 front panel audio connector by any chance? Doing so can lead to weird things happening.

My integrated sound card once stopped working for no reason at all, and the problem turned out to be, drum roll please, Windows. I got on Linux and all was fine.
