Hey all,

Was kinda curious. I hadn't checked the "Program Announcements" in some time. Guess I was a little preoccupied ^_^

However, I headed down there, hoping to see some new cool DBP or DarkGDK games, only to find that all the popular threads were tools and plugins! Honestly, if you look at all the Popular threads, i.e. red topics, they are all enhancements. There's;
-D3DFunc 3.0
-Extended Terrain XYZ terrain maker
-Dev C++ Plugin framework
-GUI Studio
-Tersculpt another terrain maker
-Multisync multiplayer plugin
-Enhanced Animation Plugin
-DBP Collision DLL
-DBP Lua Plugin
-Advanced Sprite plugin
-Vegetator Program

Also the 4d something the rather, but it's not a game from what I can tell =P

So I'm wondering...Where have all the game makers gone? Are all projects now these huge, multi-man multiple year long projects? I remember back in the day there was a new game every week!

I guess I'm being kinda hypocritical...I'm not working on a game, but rather programming an engine in openGL =P

Anyways, was wondering if anyone else felt that we need less tools, more games!

Cheers,
Bishop

Well you see, in most views, it's easier to make an application than a game.
A game requires major story planning, graphics, gui, sound and lots of planning.
A program requires about 1/4 of that, depending on what you plan on doing.

Just my 2 cents.

Yeah, every time I think about a game I want to make, I start thinking of a library or a tool I need to make developing the game easier. Guess what, I have 10000 tools!

Enjoy your day.

I agree
it's like everyone thinks they need to produce something of commercial quality or they just wont bother.
I want to see more games from DBCers
we have more talent here than any other board from what I've seen
I sound like I'm challenging the forum to a duel... I am! :p

I think there are several games in production. (mine included)

There seems to be a lot of interest in improving the quality look and feel of the games in production too, thus the need for better tools to make those games. I suspect when there are enough good tools available that more games will start to emerge from the depths of development.

Some of us start making games but don't have the time to finish them - we're still making them, but a lot of us haven't yet reached that 'finished' stage - though I'll be in the 'program announcement' boards one day. I am in the making of a text adventure - so you never know.

Also, some popular games are being made like Geisha House, Pirates of Port Royale, Dream and others.

People are too impatient these days to wait until the end of production. So they post on WIP and when it is finnished they dont post on Program announcements as they dont want to get flammed because they already posted in WIP.

I'm making a game. There's a long way between getting some sprites running around on a map and making a Smash Bros. clone though.

We are heading into exam season aswell, most people would put off any personal hobbies or social life during this time.

Applications are more likely to be commented upon rather than games, because posting a screenshot of some boxes isn't going to get people to download the game, they actually need some proper content, which most people on here lack the skill to do.

In my honest opinion TGC has never had a good record for actual games produced except around competitions.

It's always seemed like most of the things coming out were tools, and for the sheer number of users here - very little games are actually completed.

Alot of the finished, quality output comes from a small user base here.

plugins and development tools do usually seem quicker to make, but i've been making one about 2 years, so i guess it can depend

The WIP board is quite full of games but yeah, most people don't finish what they start. Been downloading some demos from GameTunnel and there's a bunch of good indie ones there but I don't think I've seen anything made in DB/DBP.

yeah, people are making games. There's the WIP board, and the programming talk board where the WIPs that aren't written in a TGC language are.

I don't bother with Program Announcements. It seems a bit dead to me. WIP is more fun, and WIP is where I'll release my games. Wartorn did better in WIP than in PA.

Don't forget this forum must make up less than 1% of the DBP/DBC owners. Many people will buy the software, only visit here if they need help (if that), and make some games for other websites without even a peep on this forum.

I think making games is more fun than making apps even if it takes more time.

dont hate people who rip you off, cheat and get away with it, learn from them

I think the main problem is the length of time and the amount of skill it takes to make a game compared to an app, and then compare that with the level of kudos you get between the two. You pretty much have to make something amazing looking or come up with something really special to get decent interest in a game. But an app can be a simple small thing that everyone wants and requires no artistic skill whatsoever (which scuppers a lot of people on games). And a lot of apps will really draw the interest. Brown hilly matrix screenshots get boring after a while, no matter what your future plans are for the next half a decade of development.

Cheers

I know people are still making games. But you have to look farther to see the jewels from the rubbish. What I mean is take a look there is xna for xbox 360 and playstation network for its home brewed games and wii is starting its own casual game line up for its online website. So all in all games are still being made; maybe not with Dbp but they are being created. I am working on 2 games with a ton of potential(Tgc heroes and the Last Great swordsmen). Alot of people that make a game in dbp don't flaunt that it is the complier they used to make it so sometimes and may even go unnoticed being made using DBPro. I look forward to seeing more finely done WIP's being made into games here in a few years once the hobbyist game maker gets more easier tools to use to make stuff for their game( like cheaper and more readiavailable game making tools). All the best,
Beastegargoyle

I would make loads of games, if it weren't for the fact that I can't make media If I try to use cubes and things temporarily, it just looks so rubbish that I lose all incentive to work on it anymore!

Well, I'll be making more games once I've got Dream done... I think I'd like to do some simple short games afterwards so that I can build up my engine in. So, count me in for game makers, and ones in DBC for that matter.

Games, and games only, and DBC only. DBPro only if absolutely necessary.
