I succumbed to the pressure and watched it. I challenge *anyone* to watch the review and not get interested in playing this game! I had no idea there's elaborate indoor elements to it--- darts, bowling, cybercafes, etc. Wow. I got a call yesterday from EB telling me the game is ready for me on Tuesday----- bliss

It is quite mind boggling what you can do, it's strange that you can't ride the ferris wheel. For me I wonder how much this will actually add to the game, I like doing missions and for the story to progress. Well, I don't have a system to play it on.

I got my copy early this morning... and so far I have been impressed... I have loved the GTA series since I played the demo of the original on my PC...

It looks amazing, sounds amazing and plays amazing My favourite little feature so far is when you have a car equipped with satnav and you set a waypoint the voice on the gps tells you where to go... 'in 100 yards turn left'...

I also unlocked the 'warm coffee' achievement which made me laugh...

Haha, I'm so getting a job in 2 months. xD

not sure which console I want, I've heard that the PS3 is quieter than 360. :o I like quiet . I also heard the ps3 doesn't have render problems as much as the 360 has as well, AND free online play hmm I'll want a 360 since my friends all have it, and its cheaper :/

Very true. During play, you won't notice the 360 too much, especially not the Elite version, which has a quieter disc drive.

Completely untrue. "Render problems" is an issue of the game title -- not the console. If anything, the graphics processor in the PS3 has less power than that of the 360, which also hampers the graphics on the PS3 somewhat, given the way most modern games are built.

On the other hand, the PS3 has a lot more raw processing power, but generally of a kind that is not optimal for games. There's a reason why Kutaragi is no longer the chief engineer at Sony's entertainment hardware division.

Yep. But Xbox Live has a far better service, if you ask me. Most probably because it's been around for several years more than PSN.

Most features of PSN is essentially the same, except not as good, as on Xbox Live. Besides, having to first download and THEN install things has had me simply looking at trailers on the Internet and trying demos on the 360 instead. It's simply too tiresome.

This place is like a ghost town today, I guess a lot of people here have got GTA4 and would rather play that than post .

As for choosing which console to get, really it boils down to the games, look for games that you'd like to play and decide which console based on that. Personally I don't think there's much noticeable difference, from the perspective of a 360 owner with lots of 360 owning friends, I'd say the red ring of death problem should be a factor. Over half the people I know with a 360 have had the red rings, which means sending your 360 away for around 1 month, not ideal. 1 poor guy I know would love to get GTA4, he actually traded in his 360 for an Elite just in case the red ring problem reared it's head, which of course it did!. I'd probably have a better POV about this if the Elite console had fixed the problem.

In case anyone wonders: a BD doesn't have to spin as fast as a DVD to reach the same read speed, this is because the data is like 5 times as dense.

Actually from an engineering perspective that's true. In order to have quick loading times on the 360 it has to spin like a jet engine. In some games (Gears of War, Rock Band) I'd prefer to have a longer load time to have a quieter drive. I would love to see solid state consoles once again!

From everywhere I've read, the 360 version is the one to get because of the exclusive downloadable content which will be revealed later this year. If you're an IGN Insider member you can check out the side-by-side comparison of the two games:

PS3 has a sharper image and slightly shorter load times because of the 7.5 minute install time and MS forces developers to assume some players won't have a hard drive so there's no caching. The 360's colours in the game are more vibrant, however. It's really a toss-up.

If you have to make a choice, I would recommend buying the same version as all your friends so you can play them online. If you have 50 Xbox Live friends, get that version. The gameplay and visuals are near virtually identical.

Actually, the 360's GPU is better. The 360's GPU is faster in every way, except for texture fetching. The PS3's texture fetching is 62% faster than the 360's, but overall the 360's GPU is 40% faster than the PS3's. PS3 just has the raw processing power and the amazing quietness!

also it seems that ps3 is at 630p (i would of thought 640p) and that it has no AA but instead a blur filter, saying that everyone is still saying PS3 looks better with better colour pallet, less dithering, has less pop in and frame rate issues

It's weird how the PS3 is setup, you've got a suped'up GPU that exclusively handles all the 3D, thats a monolith of a task on a GPU. And it's Cell 9 core beast is designed for multimedia processing. Though thats 1 main core(Power Processor Element (PPE)) and 8 other cores(Synergistic Processor Elements (SPEs)) that are completely different. Since it's new tech, we won't see it real potential for a while but it will get there eventually.

Hardware wise, I think the PS3 is amazing and not just a small PC stuffed into a small white now black box. They really thought outside the box for this one, well in the CPU deparment. Doesn't mean I saying which is better, just that it's a new direction for the same result.

Still nothing beats the PC, well the Cell processor did out class the PC CPUs in multimedia areas(compressing/decompressing/decrypting data(not sure on that one), stuff like that) for a while, But now, no chance. Consoles have no chance at competing with mid+ to top end PC now days. To think that Intel did that 80 core CPU not to long ago, though it will be years before we get that kind of power. I just want one rich developer out there to come up with a game so advance just to test the how far a max out PC could go, even if they had to use nitrogen cooled overclock CPU and GPU, I just want to see that test.

GTA IV launch was insane where I work. We had people lining up for the copies we managed to grab onto, and even the PS3+GTA4 combo went so rapid we were out of stuff 12 minutes after opening.

Not surprising, the rest of the day was filled with explaining we really had no secret stash.

How in the heck do you get onto multiplayer? Do you have to do some of the story first? Because I don't see an option for it and me and my friend want to tear up the city in free for all.

use the free 1 month gold voucher and yeah you have to use the ingame phone system, from there select menu -> multiplayer.

Ah, okay cool. I have live. But in the PSP versions its under the game menu. I LOVE that GPS thing, thats the kind of stuff that makes a game from good to great. However the handling of the cars takes some getting used to haha.

Man, GTA IV sold around 4.2 million units in one day worldwide, Microsoft and Sony are laughing. Well worth the 100 million it costed to make. You can proberly tell that companies are playing it smart and not releasing any games while it's GTA week. I wonder what Rockstar are doing right now?

I hate how if you fail a mission you can't restart it just before the action, you have to re-drive to the place first.

I just haaaaate motorbike chases. I even tried to park a fast car next to the bike, but after the cutscene ended and the game tells you to chase him on the bike, the car was gone! In previous GTAs you could pre-emptively mess up the mission to make it easier

I recall in SA that one motorbike chase when your rapper friend gets out of jail was particularly difficult, and you could not mess it up as far as I could figure out

With practice though you were able to win, once you knew his path by heart.

There is a chase mission much later which I found much harder... but unlike this one you COULD shoot the guy off the bike... I don't know how much ammo I wasted trying to shoot this biker off his bike... It wasn't until I manged to get in a banshee and ram him that I realised he wasn't going to come off his bike and then I just followed him until the end...

I realized something that is really stupid in GTA, long missions without checkpoints. Really annoying!
