Okay, so I had to wipe my HDD and reinstall windows. I just finished installing the the latest version of DirectX (March 2008), the DirectX SDK, MSVC++, and Dark GDK. But when I go to compile the 'DarkGDK - Game' wizard, it says it can't find 'dplayx.lib'. Any idea what's going on?

DGDK uses the August 2007 DXSDK... Maybe that was the problem... OR maybe not...

This is most likely the case. The latest DX SDK contains no DirectPlay library.

Ahh, ok, I guess I'll go and download another 600MB file so that I can get GDK working. Is TGC planning on somekind of update to fix it, or will we have to use the August 2007 SDK for the rest of forever?

Well.. if you just use the right SDK and compile against it, I think you can run your programs on any machine with THAT directx version or Higher... um... not sure how Direct10 works out though... I think they definately need a August2007 directX9 or higher - but end users don't need the whole SDK... just a compatible directx9.

Most probably... yes... Every SDK is different in some way or another (that's sort of obvious because obviously they are different versions)... The resources that DGDK uses from DXSDK are all in the Aug2007 package... Who knows they might be in some other package too but can you really be sure... If TGC wanted to make DGDK "compatible" with all other SDKs they would have to rewrite parts of the engine and probably remove some features too... Now why the hell would TGC want to do that?!?! So if you are a developer using DGDK you're gonna have to have the Aug2007 SDK... BUT that doesn't mean you can't have newer versions too... Every SDK is independant and doesn't require or associate with any other SDK so you can have as many SDKs inatlled on your machine as you want... I have the March 2008 and August 2007 and November 2007 installed on my machine...

And for end users who will play your game and use your product they will just need DX9 runtime... No specific version or anything... Only us developers have to worry about that...

Ya, I guess it's not that bad, I'm just not very happy that I'm gonna have to download it now on my 1 byte-per-hour internet connection. Heh, maybe if I'm lucky I'll be done before school lets out in June.

Maybe you should think about high speed... But before deciding on one research and make sure you're getting what you pay for... I really like my ISP because they actually give what they advertise... They say "upto" 1.5 mbps and I usually get higher than that ...

Unlike "others" (no name's will be mentioned *cough cough "Bell"*)

'dplayx.lib' is now depricated (no longer used) but if you copy it into the correct location you can still use it. Distribution of your Game may be a problem though - I haven't check that yet.
