I was just looking around for traveling prices to Japan. Only the flight there and back from Sweden is about 2000 USD per person. A complete guided tour with food and lodging is about 5000-6500 USD. Like one 11 day tour takes you to a sushi academy, trips around Japan and a visit to a sake brewery among many other things. Well, I could afford that right now but there's a lot of other things I could spend that money on. Keep on dreaming...

The prices aren't very cheap, no. You don't need a guide though, more fun to roam aimlessly (maybe not for everyone, but I prefer that). Or if you have a contact there, you could save alot of money by crashing their place. Renting rooms in Japan relieves you of a small fortune each day. Good thing to eliminate as much expense as you can from that area as it is a cancer on your wallet.

When (if) you do go, and somehow get treated with some green tea on the house, don't decline the offer. Drink it! Or they'll eat your soul as it's considered very rude...

How good is your japanese? Best to learn a couple of words and phrases. Not many english signs to go after, altough that has been improving lately.

I don't know a whole lot of Japan myself nor do I know much Japanese, although I've picked up more Japanese words then I can remember from my German classes in high school. Only phrases I know are "Watashi wa NAME" and "Anata wa NAME" But yeah, before going I definitely wanna learn some more. I also don't know anyone in Japan.

The whole thing about going with a guide is that you get to go to a lot of places you would never have thought of yourself and experience a lot of things of Japan. You also get someone who know Japanese well and a small group to travel together with. Of course, I would travel with at least one person I already know; someone to talk to and share a room with, preferably female

Japan is the most expensive country in Asia to visit. If you want to live like a king you should check out Beijing or Shanghai. The Forbidden City and the Great Wall are in Beijing and there's cheap hotels and tours

I too would love to see Japan more as I only hung out in the airport on a connection flight, but it's so expensive

Beijing is not a bad idea, much much cheaper It's not Japan though but it would be interesting to see the Great Wall among other things.

Unless you're really set on japan it would probably be cheaper to go to Beijing. Though japan is definitely cool... i've only been to the airport for a connect flight, like jeku, but the airport was pretty impressive. Three different kinds of trash cans so you could recycle effectively (except i couldn't read japanese so i just had to guess from the pictures lol). Completely automatic everything in the bathrooms (you don't have to touch anything). And there was an overall shiny/clean look to the entire place... not that other countries don't have some or all of those features in their airports... it just stood out to me more so than others.

If you are dreaming about traveling to Japan, do not let prices stop you. Save money until you can afford to travel and go for it. Speaking as someone who has traveled a lot, it is very good to travel the world to see other things then your garden.

The Great Wall would be nice to see .

Darkness, you haunt me. If I give in, I would be an monster beyond imagining. Light, you guide me. Thanks to you, I see past the nothingness. Life, I choose to live in the light.

i have been there many times and think japan is very nice. i never learned a bit of the language but still managed to get around. like one other poster said "there are no signs in english" very true. i have been to atsugi and misawa and traveling around we used taxies and trains. both of those options are a hard way around but just keep asking people and you will find many of the younger folks speak english and will help you out with directions. its your decision but i would not suggest renting a car and driving around yourself due to population of vehicles on the roads there, but again that is just me so you do what will make the trip funnest for you. have a great time

It wouldn't be a new car but I get your point

I'm considering upgrading my PC instead, for a lot less.

I suggest you let some endorphins lose and then think about japan, or a new PC or whatever you want. It might seem a good idea now, but when the endorphins get to work, you'll have other ideas
