Have you plugged two 56k modems together? LAN has a wider plug. I don't think you will be able to share anything over 56k.

yes, first of all, make sure that you are using the LAn cable and not just a phone modem cable. Then, you will need to setup a network from my computer and control panel. enable it to have file and printer sharing as well as TCIP. really, you should just get a router and have internet and file sharing wirelessly or wired.

I just plugged the two PCs together with a LAN crossover cable. They automatically shared internet, which allowed me to setup a FTP server (using FileZilla) so files could be shared between the two systems.

Wasn't for me either. I plugged them together, and the one that wasn't connected directly to the internet suddenly got internet access. You've also got to make sure that the LAN cable you're using is a crossover cable; two crossover cables or a single normal cable simply won't work.

I am using XP Home, so maybe it did something automatically that XP Professional doesn't.

In sequence. I tried it once, it just made a big normal cable:

PC[-[Crossover]-]Adaptor[-[Crossover]-]PC

You use single RJ45/UTP/CAT5 crossover to connect two network cards directly or use two regular straightthru if you have a hub or switch/router in between. Share it using a LAN ip like 192.168.1.x 255.255.255.0 and use the TCP/IP or Windows File Sharing

A modem connection would be a serial connection and it's gona be slow. Not seen anyone use it since Doom and Laplink pre millenium era! I think it identifies it's self as Com1 or Com2. again you need a special crossed over cable for the job.

just do this

--------Modem
----------|
-------Router
-------|-------|
---Laptop---PC

using the LAN cable, then use the built in windows "Create Network"
just make sure the Workgroup is the same for both pc's.

then when u go to My Network Places, you should see the other pc's Sharing Folder

Why?

Does your cable modem have 4 utp ports on it? If it has it has a switch/hub built in. If not see if your ISP can supply one with an inbuilt switch/hub.

If they can't and your cable modem is USB you could probably add a wireless network card to the main PC and share internet access to the laptop using it's wifi connection.
