I recently started renting a property and I need to set up a landline phone so I can get broadband. The problem is, the property has been empty for the last 3 months (that might explain the stale smell!) and the inventory from the estate agent said nothing about a phone provider. Apart from the unpaid British Gas bills we've been getting for the previous tenant there has been nothing form any phone company, except for the previous tenants' mobile network. How do I go about finding out if the property has a landline, who it's with, what the number is, etc? And how would I go about setting one up if none exists? It's the first time I've lived in my own place (with a mate) having both moved out of our parents' houses and we are complete and utter noobs when it comes to life!

Fight the good fight of faith,
Lay hold on Eternal Life.

Well, you could always call a phone company. They should be able to tell you if a property has phone service. They should have something in directory assistance.

Ask your landlord and check for a socket to plug a phone in, if there is one you'll probably just need to setup an account with the phone provider (BT?) they'll issue you with a phone number once your account is setup.
