Yeah, they recorded their next album called "The Slip" and made it available for download under CC licence (320kb/s .mp3's; FLAC & 2 other formats - a iTunes format and a HQ wav)
Your opinions?

How are they going to make money, perhaps?

Because they offer it on a CD and Vinyl for all of the people that actually want a physical copy of it.

Listening to it right now, it's pretty decent. Never listened to NiN before this though....

It's ok, although I'm not really liking the new sound too much. I thought Year Zero was going to be a one off in terms of sound - it's very clean and 'direct', but Ghosts and "The Slip" have continued the same kind of sound. I must admit I miss the random sprawling soundscapes of the Downward spiral and the fragile etc.

There's definitely good stuff here though (especially liking "Head down")

Its alright, better than 'year zero' or 'ghosts', which I thought were terrible. But its all still going downhill for NIN ever since 'with teeth'.

That was very nice and intelligent from them.

I believe that all of the bands should do this. Distributing music freely helps much on spreading their image. Great bands can earn money from shows, and the success of these depend on the band's popularity. People buy the experience today rather than the product itself. The physical album (CD, vinyl et cetera) is for collections. Actually, I prefer to rip the CD's and listen to legal MP3s over ruining my precious physical album. The experience you have in a live presentation is what deserves more money, in my opinion. Paying for music is something almost absurd in my mind, because artists do not sell music, they sell physical objects. With the growth of piracy and all of the musical market, selling at low prices and distributing something for free is a nice tactic for investing in better experiences.

Some small Brazilian bands distribute their songs freely on the internet. Some of them are great. They become popular quickly and live well from shows. A band made a promotion where one person was chosen to receive a free particular show. That is the best of the experience.

I do not feel well buying music. I like the experience better. That is what puts me off buying MP3 on-line. There is not special sensation in that. I have CDs that have not even been removed from the original plastic, because I like the experience of having CDs forever.

Cheers.
