I was browsing some of my old PC Computing magazines and was amused at some of the computer prices. (see attached) This is from October, 1991. It's amazing what technology and mass production can do for prices. This is just about the time that IBM was introducing it's 486/25 model, which retailed (without monitor) at over $4000.00. These prices do not include operating system.

Notice the CD-ROM option is as much as some people pay for their computers today.

Best.

I bought my first PC in 1995 from Escom (now defunct pc chain in the UK). It was the most powerful pc available at the time.

P133 processor in full tower
1GB Hard disk
8MB Ram
keyboard + mouse
Sound blaster AWE32 sound
4x CD-ROM
Windows 95
14" monitor

It cost the ridiculous price of exactly £2337.11 - I still have the receipt!

Boo!

Depending on what you want, Computers are still expensive today, I just looked on Dell.co.uk and tried to place the Specs of My computer, it didn't go as high as mine is Graphics Memory, Added Cards, Ect, But it was still telling me it would be at least £900, For a system less powerful than mine which only cost about £400, (including Moniter, printer, Ect), Although i guess it depends on what you want from a PC and where you get it from, I recently built one for a friend for only £100, Even got a 17Inch Monitor for only £7.50, (about $15), 2nd hand, but in good condition

But personally I've never brought a prebuilt PC from a Store, I got my First PC from a Company that was throwing some away, cost me nothing, and even got a nice server case which is still in the loft somewhere.

The cost of PC parts is on the rise, mostly due to the price of oil/cost of shipping, etc. I'm beginning to push up system prices as well. Let's hope it doesn't get back to 1991 prices.

Best.

The CDROM drive was pretty cheap actually. We paid $800 for our 1X tray-loaded CDROM drive in 1992.

My 1st CD-ROM drive was 2x speed and ran off the serial port (pre usb)

Price of stuff is going up with inflation except maybe graphics cards and a CPUs as both Intel & Nvidia are engaged in a price war with AMD/ATI

DinoHunter (still no nVidia compo voucher!), CPU/GPU Benchmark, DarkFish Encryption DLL, War MMOG (WIP), 3D Model Viewer

I've still got some of those trays somewhere. I don't know why I keep that kind of crap. Perhaps one day, I'll open a museum. LOL
