Hi,

I'm thinking of buying the above book and was wondering if it was any good. If anyone has/had it, could they tell me if it has helped them learn Windows Programming in C++?
Also, if possible could someone tell me of anywhere cheaper to get it than £35.99?

I have the 5th edition of the book. As long as you don't pick up the bad habit (in my opinion) of Hungarian notation, it's a great book to learn windows programming from. It won't teach you good C++ coding though - all the code is C.


Before I get flamed ... I did say 'in my opinion'. Don't argue with me, you won't convince me otherwise - you either get a maintenance nightmare when you change the type of a variable, or you leave it and then the code is lying to you

for some reason, half the code around our systems here is like:
dtStartDate = "01/01/2003";

kinda like "£1000s of pounds".

I have a nice old book.... WINDOWS VISUALIZATION, Programming with C/C++ 3d viualization, simulation, and virtual reality.
By lee adams. written in 1994, but its my favorite.

I don't know of any books that teach C++ *and* windows at the same time.

Get yourself a good C++ book (maybe The C++ Black Book), then get a windows book (Petzold is good) but try and avoid MFC coz it's my feeling that MS is slowly moving away from this (another personal opinion I'm afraid ).

My point exactly, and if you decide to change the representation of the variable (like maybe hold it in string format) you have to rename all occurrences of the variable. My feeling is that if you can't work out the type from the name, you haven't named it right.
