However maybe the colours could be a bit more vibrant, in the 2nd pic the 'electrons' just look like coloured spheres, if they were instead glowing planes pointing to the camera it'd look a lot better I think, then you could easily fake a glow. I dont know if you've ever played the old Atom, but it wasnt right either. It was mainly the game play to teach the TOE rather than the make up of an atom. Which could get complicated and confusing.
In the old game, it was the "nucleus" and you shot "electrons" into it to form an atom.
You'll have to play it to get a better idea of where its coming from and the look thats intended. And your right, the 'electrons' just look like coloured spheres, because they are just coloured spheres. They did have a billboarded aura around them in the beginning but I took it out because it was playing tricks with my eyes and I had a hard time keeping focus on the game because of the blur effect it caused.
