A couple weeks ago the sound on my computer stopped working. It was totally fine one night, then the next morning I turned my computer on and the sound was gone. I didn't update windows, download any sound drivers, or anything along the lines of that to cause it. I simply shut off the PC, turned it back on and the sound didn't work. The speakers work fine on my brother's PC so I know that's not the problem. I have the latest drivers for my sound card, and the speakers are plugged in correctly. Any idea what's going on??

Is it onboard sound or a pci card? If it's onboard, contact your motherboards manufacturer or look at their site or something. Search around, I'm sure other people have had the same problem.

You checked mute right?

PCI, it's a Creative SB X-Fi.

Try reinstalling the drivers. If that doesn't work. Uninstall the card. Switch which PCI slot its in and reinstall it.

Yeah, good suggestion Dink. I didn't think of that.

Start looking what SB would do for a defective card. How long ago did you get it? It might still be under warranty.

I bought the computer sometime back in October. I'll check and see if I can do anything about the sound card.

Well I just took a Creative diagnostics test thing and it said that my sound card passed every test so I don't think that's the problem.

Vista Home Premium. I'm starting to regret getting Vista more and more everyday...

There are a lot of problems with that sound card on Vista from the research I did before I bought one. Most can be resolved from what I read but I don't have any info our sources to help you off hand. You're gonna have to google it.

Yes well vista magically makes soundcards stop working.

The only problems would be vista and a soundcard not working to begin with, if it just stopped one day, it's almost certainly a hardware issue.

Check your mixer though, to make sure that your sound isn't actually muted, secretly Your mixer can be obtained by right clicking on sound icon > mixer.

Of course, that's probably not the case.

Did you try moving the card to a different pci slot? That has solved the issue with some hardware with me in the past. Dunno why it fixed it, perhaps irq things or witches or something.

Vista may also have been set to use the digital out instead of analog out (or vice versa) check your settings from the control panel.

Hurray for teh logd!

Ok I opened up my PC and screamed like a little girl. It's sooo confusing. I can't even find my sound card.

That's a pic of my PC. Anybody have any clue where the sound card is? Sorry if I sound really noobish, I've never built/opened up a computer before.

I dont see the pic probably cause this computer has an internet content filter on it and its probably blocking the site hosting your picture, but the sound card is the one with the plugs for your speakers Just look at the back of the case and find those ^_^

K, I checked it out and the jacks I've been plugging my speakers into are on the motherboard. Does that mean I've been using the onboard sound the whole time?

Yes. Your motherboard has integrated sound apparently. Do you have an audio card as well? If so try plugging your speakers into that.

My sound is working! I don't know why or how, but it's working so I'm happy.
