Yes, the tutorials start with "Hello World" but this is mainly to get you familiar with the coding style and to make sure you can compile.

Here is printing hello world:

and here is a basic 3d object loading:

These are as simple as it gets. If you are having difficulty with the basic tutorials shipped with DarkGDK, then I would suggest you learn C++ first.

Ah the blessings of being a savant.
To know that the Tutorials arn't any good on the very day you join the forum. it took me weeks of reading and studying to conclude that the tutorials that come with the system showed all of the basic progrqmming elements needed to create a basic game.

Perhaps TGC would please invent a system that would allow for all knowlege to be passed from the USB port directly into the brain, skipping the effort part

Dgdk is a port for c++ programmers, if you're not a c++ programmer stick with FPSC or DBPRO. IF you want to learn c++, go here. http://www.cplusplus.com/doc/tutorial/ then come see us in a year.

I learned almost everything I need to know to use Dark GDK in about a month.

That long, eh?

Seriously, I try to learn what I can from whatever documentation is available on almost any computer related undertaking I do. However, anxiety takes over and I just have to dig in and try things. The docs are there as a reference but there's nothing like getting your hands virtually dirty to get to know a system.

- Not C++ you didnt. Maybe some syntax, or function calls. But wait till the game catches up with you. You better have a ID management class, and a good understand of how to build classes. I'm not suggesting you know, or dont know what you think you know. I'm saying c++ is not something you learn in a month, period.

I'll have to agree with you on that. With C++ it took me at least two years to get up the nerve to open the book. I was teaching C at the time and it took me that long to consider trying to tackle C++. When I did I read as far as I could before becoming disenchanted with my ability to put it all together. I laid off for about a year and started to re-read it. A lot of the earlier stuff became clear because I was now learning it in relationship to a larger view of the language. It was easier to see why things were done the way they were and why it was significant.

My advice, skim the documentation for content. Then read it for comprehension.

Oh, and a triumph that is. Unlearning C to pick up C++ I here is not an easy chore contrary to popular belief . For me I had to go to C++ from Quick Basic. Fortunately I was in school a the time. My teacher was good, damn good. yet that was a 6 moth introduction to c++. Then c++ 2, and advanced... Lets see oh in two months I did to a hello world, and created a few classes.. Then Link Lists and pointers decided to come in to my life.. Damn I love this stuff....

If you got here via DB Pro and use GDK as an dialect of that you can learn the basic syntax of C++ in a fairly short time. I am by no means talking about a full understanding of C++ but simple substitution of the "if" , "or" "else" etc. Although I use the class structures in a simplistic way when Jason and Lilith are talking about some of the more subtle applications of the language they really are talking Greek to me.

Jason and Lilith Please do not take that as a criticism. I use it as a way to further my knowlege base

All the best and still learning

Wow!!! I've never spoken Greek before.

Truth to tell, although I'm comfortable with C++, there are a lot more advanced things that I either can't wrap my mind around or found a need to do so. When I look at some source code from other people it boggles my mind just how obfuscated it looks.

(Lilith of Course ), DavidW, IanM, VanB, Visigoth, JinZai, UniCoder, DarkCoder, um.... Oh Duh - Benjamin, Micheal P, Lost In Thought, Evolved, TempIceK, SidSinister, Alquerian, TDK, CattleRustler, Cash Curtis II, and more I know.... like you Codger - I've seen you help quite a few during my peeks at the forums.

Pff, I don't know much of anything, I suppose.

Or more likely I just don't make enough posts for you to remember! Either way it's chill, I don't need to be on your list.

Relevant to the topic, I learned Borland's Turbo-C++ when I was 7 years old, on an ancient workstation in my basement, and I did it without books or teachers, only some very basic example programs. Of course, that was the days of DOS.

My site, for various stuff that I make.

Anyone know what early was? Commodore Pet, maybe? My first computer was an Altair 8800, soldered together by myself and coded with front panel switches.

Peu-peu???

No punch cards for me either, just a paper tape reader until I moved up to a cassette drive and finally an external floppy drive.

I still have the thing up in the attic and maybe one day I'll bring it down to see if it still powers up. I used to have an IMSAI that I eventually gave to a friend to convert into a coffee table/conversation piece.

My bad Lilith sir, mam.. Most women would not touch a computer prior to 90 let alone use one? Heck my mother would not go near it.. though she though it was cool that hitting the back space would actually erase the letter...However, sex is irrelevant..

I tried the abacus but it was too complicated for me. My family spent two years in Japan when I was a kid and we happened to live right across the street from a school where I'd see the kids there clicking away on their abacii (is that correct?).

I still have my slide rule somewhere. I put it away when my C students refused to try to understand how to use it.

Okay, I made up the part about the students.
