I'm looking at buying an 8800gt and selling off my 8600gts, these are the cards I'm looking at:

Sorry for the excessively long link.

I'm leaning towards the asus, what are your guy's thoughts? For the near future, I won't be running at much above 1024x768, so I'm looking for aa and sweet effects, rather than high resolutions.

Hurray for teh logd!

I don't know much about graphics cards, but I recently bought a 8800GT from XFX (Alpha Dog Extreme edition).

The first thing I noticed was how loud the fan was and there isn't an option to adjust the fan speed.

I've searched around and apparently all 8800GT's are running with fans on full blast, so you'll get a jet engine in your computer, like me.

I am concidering buying a new gpu fan, just because of the loudness of this thing. And also it doesn't cool down the card much.
At stress my card runs at 75-79 degrees celsius. With 49degrees on idle.

I allways afraided from a clowns. aww..

Ye, that's why I was leaning on the one that has the zalman fan.. and it couldn't be worse than my diamondplus That thing sounds like a train, in an otherwise totally silent setup

I have this Zotac installed and it works like a treat. Don't know about the sound, since my 2x 120mm fans running at full speed make much more noise.

Theory is when you know something, but it doesn't work. Practice is when something works, but you don't know why.
Programmers combine theory and practice: Nothing works and they don't know why.

I just bought a geforce 8800GT (EVGA) it runs like a charm the fan is quiet but then again i have 4 fans that you can hear in the next room. But they do run hot i bought a pci slot cooler to help with the heat and it has helped, the card will most likely be the hottest thing in your case so ventilation is a must. But i can run any game on high with no problems at all. I'd recommend the EVGA card, but only because i have never had a problem with a EVGA card =)

Thats the card i got....

nvidia is discontinuing the 9800 series and announcing the next series this month, so you may want to hold off on the purchase for just a bit. The 9800 prices may drop like a stone shortly.

If you want quiet try an ATI 3850/3870 based on a 55nm (instead of nvidias 65nm) chip it requires power and less cooling. I have even seen a fanless 3870 floating around somewhere on the web.

DinoHunter (still no nVidia compo voucher!), CPU/GPU Benchmark, DarkFish Encryption DLL, War MMOG (WIP), 3D Model Viewer

Well I think I'm gonna go for the:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150280

I'm gonna buy it on Thursday, I'm not willing to wait a month (or more) for prices to drop

This card seems the best out of the bunch. It's 100mhz slower than the gigabyte card, but it's got twice the ram.

I'm kinda bummed that none of these have the rear exhaust like my 8600gts, but I think it'll be fine, i've got a big 120mm zalman cpu fan pushing towards a 120mm rear exhast, two 80mm front exhaust and a top exhaust, I think she can take it

See the ASUS one here,

I've got one that looks exactly the same, and has the exact same specs. Only difference is that I have 1GB DDR3 VRAM.

Oh yes I got a new beat computer, I'll be making a thread over the next few days! Stay tuned for pictures!
