Thought this might spark some peoples interest, never heard of the "technique" being used but hey you know...

50mpg doubling honda's quote? where i come from the average family car can do 40-50mpg anyway...

Some tips for lazier drivers:
The most fuel efficient drive is lowest possible speed without straining the engine in highest gear.
Use the RPM counter as an approximate to how quickly you're using up your fuel.
Coast/freewheel downhill by not only letting off the gas, but also holding the clutch. you could take it of gear into neutral and take your foot off the clutch, but this is illegal and has been known to cause crashes. This is because while being out of gear, you can't accelerate away from a hazard/put power into a swerve.

By letting your foot off the gas with the clutch still engaged, you're still sucking fuel from the tank. By disengaging the clutch, the connection between the wheels and engine goes, hence the wheels can carry on turning without 1) engine braking 2) sucking fuel from the tank.

If you're daring enough to go into neutral, you may aswell go the whole hog and cut the engine entirely, though I wouldnt due to having power steering, ie the steering would lock up completely if i did.

According to Top Gear, a modern engine uses less fuel to keep itself running if you coast with the engine in high gear.

80 km/h in highest gear is what they've been recommending here the past few years.

I hope that freak loses his license after this segment. Shutting off his car while driving, he should be ashamed at his dangerous behavior:/

Wow, so that is one of the people pissing everyone off while driving and causing crashes. If he really wants to save so very badly why dosent he take the bus? I mean there are places where I live where you can go to park your car and get picked up by the bus, you know if your work is farther than the station, and its like $3 to take the bus. Seriously, he should lose his license...for safety.

Not every place has a bus system, or one they feel safe riding.

Where I live, the car unions would have a fit if we a public transit system.
