While searching for some guides on other things, I eventually found a tutorial on www.vistax64.com, which, by navigating through a series of "related tutorials", eventually led me to this one:

http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/81176-speed-up-performance-vista.html

So for those of you who are always complaining about how slow Vista is, maybe that will help.

Of particular interest is - #37) Change the Number of Processors Used at Boot Up in Vista
It would appear that Vista, by default, only uses one core during startup. By increasing the number of cores it uses, it would seem that you can sharply decrease the startup time. I haven't tried it yet, but one person reported a drop in reboot time from 145 seconds to 88 seconds!

(Though my question is, why does it default to only one core?)

There are also quite a few other useful tutorials on the site.

Just one question in the ever expanding list of questions I'd like to ask Microsoft. Another being why it can't seem to end a program correctly using end program, but killing the process works just fine. What a waste.

Nice list! Will have to try some things out after work.

Couldn't see it in the list, but the best tip I've seen so far is to speed up the start menu. You know how XP's start menu was fast and good, but Vista's start menu tends to think about it now and again for half a second before opening a menu item to show items inside it? Just enough to be annoying? Well get the taskbar and start menu properties up, hit the customize button on the start menu tab, then find the "Highlight newly installed programs" checkbox and turn it off. Everything runs fast on the menu from then on, no thinking about it now and again. You just don't get the new installed items highlighted. For some reason that causes Vista to drag a little, even though XP had no worries. Sometimes I believe the XP designers were all killed or retired when parts of Vista were made...

Cheers

I am 99% probably lying in bed right now... so don't blame me for crappy typing

i guess this is the reason why when dragging an item around the sidebar, the CPU usage boosts from 40% to 80% until you hold the item still.

Really nice!
I changed the number of cores used during boot from 1 to 2 and I got a slight increase in boot speed, not much though.

The best one for me is disabling indexing. Really sped things up and still does.
