Just been having a look at a new game from LucasArts called "Fracture". The storyline isn't really that original but its not too far fetched and a lot of thought has gone into it. Even terrain deformation has been done before (ever since 'Populous') but I haven't seen it done quite this well. Your weapons can reshape the landscape to destroy enemies or to reach areas you cannot normally get to. It looks really nicely done and deforming the ground is an integral part of the game rather than just another weapon effect.
Its well worth checking out the weapon demonstration videos (especially the Vortex Grenade) and the second trailer to see how it works within the gameplay.
http://www.lucasarts.com/games/fracture/

There is also a couple of development videos explaining how they came up with everything - very interesting for anyone making games I thought. You will find them under 'Web Docs' in the 'Arsenal' section.

(Warning: The site is pretty bandwidth hungry)

Looks a lot like Halo vs Crysis in the same old post apocalyptic future and I'd hardly call having Hollywood writers to be a good thing to mention , though it _looks_ nice, from what I saw I'm not interested. The terrain deformation doesn't really look that good either, something that could be done with a good day's coding I bet, ah well.

I think Red Faction was one of the earliest games to have "terrain change" if I understand this correctly. It was called Geo-Mod though, you could blow holes in walls and make tunnels with the rocket launchers and explosive packs.

I don't like playing politically loaded games. In the first 15 seconds of the trailer, it was clear that the game was george lucas's push against global warming.

You hate Earth? Maybe you should volunteer for the first manned mission to Mars.

No, I just hate whistle blowers who twist facts in order to gain political influence, and the people who feel the urge to spread the nonsense further by using their status being it of political or non political nature. I'm all for Earth, but Earth is not in danger.

Thank you, I've been looking for that map.

Buts lets move away from the topic of global warming, as it can be a quite fiery topic to discuss.

We could tear flickenmaste apart with simple physics and science, but it wouldn't be fair nor particularly nice.

Sorry, but you can't just say lets move away from the topic and yet leave a parting shot like that. That's BS.

Here's mine then.

I knew this would turn into a global warming thing as soon as I saw the trailer.

@ Sid Sinister

I agree it's not a fair way to end a topic, but it's thin ice (no pun intended).

I'd suggest you read up on this site: http://www.icecap.us/

I had to post this link as the one you posted looked a bit less "serious". I haven't seen that site you linked to, so I can't speak for it's contents yet.

Glad to see you posted a nicer looking site. Thanks for the backup

I know it's thin ice, but I'm tired of the 'omg global warming' fanboys talking about something they probably haven't even done research on in the first place. Not saying anyone hear has gone 'fanboy' on me, but still. Everyone needs to check the facts, especially Al Gore and his pity possy. What really cracks me up is that the same day he won this little Nobel peace prize, the high court in England ruled that his 'findings' are not to be taught in schools because they contain ELEVEN HUGE INACCURACIES. Talk about owned. Thank God England had enough sense to stop his propaganda. I only wish America, who loves conspiracies and witch hunts, would follow suit. In case your curious, the inaccuracies are:

* The film claims that melting snows on Mount Kilimanjaro evidence global warming. The Government's expert was forced to concede that this is not correct.
* The film suggests that evidence from ice cores proves that rising CO2 causes temperature increases over 650,000 years. The Court found that the film was misleading: over that period the rises in CO2 lagged behind the temperature rises by 800-2000 years.
* The film uses emotive images of Hurricane Katrina and suggests that this has been caused by global warming. The Government's expert had to accept that it was "not possible" to attribute one-off events to global warming.
* The film shows the drying up of Lake Chad and claims that this was caused by global warming. The Government's expert had to accept that this was not the case.
* The film claims that a study showed that polar bears had drowned due to disappearing arctic ice. It turned out that Mr Gore had misread the study: in fact four polar bears drowned and this was because of a particularly violent storm.
* The film threatens that global warming could stop the Gulf Stream throwing Europe into an ice age: the Claimant's evidence was that this was a scientific impossibility.
* The film blames global warming for species losses including coral reef bleaching. The Government could not find any evidence to support this claim.
* The film suggests that sea levels could rise by 7m causing the displacement of millions of people. In fact the evidence is that sea levels are expected to rise by about 40cm over the next hundred years and that there is no such threat of massive migration.
* The film claims that rising sea levels has caused the evacuation of certain Pacific islands to New Zealand. The Government are unable to substantiate this and the Court observed that this appears to be a false claim.

Is anyone else tired of his little Armageddon cries? I sure am. I say sit down and stfu Al.

I know Al Gore isn't the spokesman for the global warming is true side, so I'm not just saying global warming isn't true because I loath Al Gore. There is so much evidence that our planet is just fine even after taking that bimbo out of the picture.

@Seppeku: Okay, lets get back on topic

It looks spectacular. But I don't know, I don't really think I like the style of it that much.

Don't you just hate that Zotoaster guy?

Okay, then I apologise to flickenmaste - my comment was meant light-heartedly, but I can why it was foolish.

But by all means, discuss global warming - though I don't think the mods will be pleased and it'd be breaking the AUP, but I like discussions because I learn from them.

I'm with Darkcoder on this. It doesn't look like anything special.

Considering one of their upcoming games includes the Euphoria engine and the DMM Engine, achieving what just looks to be a real time height map, I am not left wide eyed and drooling. (Which is common place for me since the accident j/k).

Battlefield: Bad Company does a better job.

I'd have to agree with BiggAdd, but disagree with Darkcoder. it doesn't look that impressive. The "deforming" looks like jello when I hit it with a spoon. I'd have to say this game looks pretty lame. However, it could be good. Who knows.

I thought the guy's voice was pretty annoying, like I've seen his character many times before in other games :/ . Still might be good though.

I too wasn't that impressed when I first saw the trailer, but the more I saw the more impressed I was. Take a look at the 'making of' type videos on the site and you get to see a bit more of what it can do.
Games like 'Red Faction' have indeed had destructible areas (walls, objects, buildings, possibly even parts of the floor) but they are usually specific areas or limited to objects. This seems to take the whole thing a stage further. At first glance it looks just like manipulating a height map or moving polygons in the terrain but its much more complex than that. It affects everything on top or around the area using real time physics. It might not sound like much but typically physics engines like static floors or immovable base objects to bounce things off. Having the entire ground a deforming physics affecting object is quite stunning when you see it in action.
The ground deforming might look like its over done too but its an integral part of the game. Without it you might say it looks like a dozen other 'run around and shoot enemies in the future' games. As well as destroying things, creating cover and killing enemies it can be used to gain access to areas you can't get to and move objects around.

I guess its just an interesting twist on an existing genre but I think its noteworthy and looks like its done well. I still want to play it.
