I would need a bit more specific question before I could help you. What exactly is it that you need?

Google "psionic" and find his tutorials.
Milkshape is a funny app. While it can be a pain in the rear to figure some of it out (animating is one example) once you do it's prety easy to do it again.

If you are good at programming why don't you try and get an artist to accompany you?
It takes quite a while to get decent at the art side of things and if you want to do both, that will eventually drive you mad!

I like using two other modeling programs along with Milkshape 3D.

GameSpace Light is a fully functional modeling program that is free.
It limits you to models containg less than 650 polys but that is a good thing for basic entities.
I use this to quickly create models that have basic shapes, because I am used to its GUI now, which makes it fast work.

and

FragMOTION is what I like to use to import the stock characters X files for editing and then export them as Milkshape 3D files to retain the animations.
I also use FragMOTION for the UV Mapping; it takes some getting used to, but I like it.
