Dont make it too high-poly. 3000 polies will do.

Well, you could use Milkshape, but for the people with nice BIIIG budgets I suggest 3DS Max.

Could it be perhaps that...oh shock horror... he doesn't have the funds for anything else...?

I use it - admittedly, its a pain in the backside, and i'd be better off using a higher powered program, but don't have the time, or space on my hardrive, to track and down.

erm,I got 3dsMax not just for modeling but for the thousand other features its got in fact I got it long before I got into game design and for business purposes, I see absolutely no reason to buy such a hefty program for modeling alone, especially if a beginner, its got an incredibly steep learning curve, go for the lower priced modeling packages or even the free ones. Once your advanced enough you MAY want to consider max.

I thought max was pretty easy to learn I started with max 5, I use max 9 now but the tutorials make learning it go fast.

You're improving. The small changes do go a long way and I think I can learn a lesson or two from you since it tends to be difficult for me to keep my models simple (a real disciplinary issue).

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think the textures transfer from Blender through an .x file. Plan A: I tried a similar technique on Cinema 4d and I ended up with an error. Plan B: I exported the .x file and used Lithium Unwrap. It worked. Save the texture as a .tga or .dds, load it up in your modeling program (to preview), and you should be well on your way to completion.

If you want to actually assign the texture onto your .fpe file, I'd use the entity creator provided by this site and load it manually. I hope my two-cents have given you an idea.
