Whilst playing a game on this board, I went to post a perfectly legitimate word, used in everyday language, meaning

1. dashing smartness, as in dress or appearance; style.
2. a swagger.
3. stylish or elegant.
4. pretentiously stylish.
5. to swagger in behavior; show off.

only to have the following message appear

It's hardly used in everyday language - maybe 100 years ago.

In any case, it's those last 4 letters that are being caught in the filter.

I replied with

Quote: "I don't see the connection"

between two posts in a game on this board and a reply came back containing the four-letter acronym of a clothing brand.

This I considered to be in bad taste but no comment from a mod

Re my above post:

In the same game, a reply post came back with the word referring to "breaks wind" ...... but nothing from a mod.

What constitutes bad language?

The swear filter was setup by Rich, it has nothing to do with mods and we are not in control of it - like most of the forum features Gearce has been moaning about this week.

I would say so, because he's right - cumin seed can go good in a curry or most chicken dishes, just don't over do it though.

That's nothing, the dell forum doesn't even allow the word 'crap.'

So I used the word crud instead, and they removed my thread all together. I think that's going way overboard and annoys me very much.

Title: Getting rid of Dell crudware

This post contains an alternate version of a word that has prohibited use on the Dell Forum. This includes using alternate words, symbols or characters to circumvent the content filter. If a word is not acceptable for posting in this Forum, substituted versions of the words are also not acceptable.

In compliance with the Dell Community Forum Terms of Service Agreement, the post will be removed as we must keep these Forums accessible to users of all ages and backgrounds. You can find the Terms of Service located at the following link:

As the original author, you can re-post without the questionable/objectionable content. For your convenience, the following is a copy of the original post:

"I don't like having the dell crudware on my computer that came preinstalled with Vista. If I format and reinstall Vista off the Dell Vista DVD, will the crudware still be there? In other words... is the crudpware part of Vista since Dell's logo is on the install CD?

-1 for the word c..r..a..p being prohibited btw... how stupid."

We understand some situations are unintentional and our efforts at this time are to inform users of situations that could lead to posting privileges being revoked from all Dell Communities (Forums, IdeaStorm, Direct2Dell).

Thank you for your cooperation and thank you for using the Dell Communities.

Sincerely,

About the bold: LOL. They can blow me for all I care. I think it's stupid you can't use the simple word of 'crap.' It's like saying 'stuff' or 'thing'. Dell for the loss. I don't care if they ban me or not. All I wanted to know is if I reinstalled Vista using their Dell Vista DVD would I get all their retarded dell programs with it... of course I said it nicer. lol.

Indeed. Grandma posted a joke that, for once, was appropriate and made sense, and now you don't get it. You must be the lowest of the lowest lifeforms, seeing Grandma is second on the list.

But we still love you.

Exactly.

The emoticon was the meat and potato of the whole post. That put me in an uncomfortable situation. My choices were to continue with it anyway and get ridiculed, or exile.

edit: nevermind

@ the wizard
It's because the script searches through the post you just wrote. If it finds any combination of letters making up a bad word regardless of whether it's a whole word or part of the word. It then gets flagged as innappropriate.

This could be due to lazy programming on Rich's part, but it's pretty rare for it to even happen so I probably wouldn't have worried about it in his case either.

No one? The filter doesn't care. The filter was programmed to do what it does and it can't get around that programming. It doesn't know you aren't dissecting the words as carefully as it is.

Why should the word AIDS be prohibited, maybe someone should get slapped or something for using it crudely, but it's just a disease. Might as well go ban the words cancer, diabetes, influenza, and the common cold as well.

Sorry if this is kind of off subject, but speaking of odd words being filtered by forums, I am not sure if anyone here ever played Final Fantasy XI, but if you ever posted on the ffxi.allakhazam.com forums, there are some strange words you cannot say:

Monkgear (any gear that the Monk job can use)
lolrng (a put down to say "LOL...Ranger")
lolmnk (same as above, but with Monk)

..and the list goes on. The filtered catches it, and says it will not let you post your message.
