I wanted to make a few requests although Im not really sure who I would be sending them to anymore since Rich isnt really affiliated with TGC and hes the Webmaster/Admin.

Anyway I was wondering if it was possible to get some sort of thing that says if a user is online or not. Like in their mini profile in threads.
This is what I mean:

Another thing I was thinking about is an old timer board.
Something like this:

Where members from years past can come and chat. Like a special board for people who have been here over 2-3 years.
Would be useful for keeping members here that don't necessarily make games anymore but still want to stay in touch with the community.

Thats all I got for now.
Michael

Not exactly what you're after but if you go to http://forum.thegamecreators.com/?m=forum#5 It lists users who are online at the bottom of the page.

The only thing i think needs improving on the forumz is an errir it seems to add, make a Code Snip like this

If i where to now edit this post, it will automatically go into the Code Snip and remove all occurances of "\", This is a pain if you've posted lots of code.

As Thraxas says...

There used to be a private forum for the more serious users, but it was abandoned some time ago. I guess it was somewhat elitist.

There should be an entire locked topic where we store all the old wonderful memorable threads in. Easy access to "I hate book".

I agree with the topic started, though. It is almost standard for forums to have that functionality nowadays.

While where throwing things out there, why not display a users post count below their name as well?

There are lots of things that are standard on most forums that TGC lacks.
There hasnt been much of an upgrade in a few years now.
I think rich did something back in 06 but it was little details.

I like the fact that post count is not displayed here. It stops people posting rubbish just to up their post count...

Your logic doesnt make sense.
People will post BS no matter what.
Being able to see your post count doesnt make you post crap.
You can still see your post count if you go to the right URL.

The only real reason I can think of is that it prevents people from being cocky and saying Im better than you because of my PC.

Oh and thats for pointing out the obviouse earlier. I have been here almost 3 years I know you can see whos online on the home page.
Thats not what I meant at all.

I do agree with Thraxas on the post count, some people see it as their ultimate purpose in life to outpost others. The online thing would be good, though, really.

I can see where she is coming from but I think there are other reasons than that.

Also does anyone else agree on having an old timers forum?

Meh, I'm pretty happy with the forum as it is. It serves it's purpose. There used to be a notepad icon under each post that you could click if you found that post helpful and wanted to keep it for future reference but that was removed, that's the only feature I can think of that would be helpful. EDIT:: On second thoughts, I'm not sure if this feature did actually exist but I think it did. My memories farting.

There is an old timers board, but only people who have been here for 3 or more years can see it. Ok maybe not.

The only thing I kinda like is the old timers forum idea cause I've been around here a while but seems like I don't contribute in any way anymore, I'm like dead weight

I honestly think this Forum is great. The only thing that would be nice to see is a thread view history/favorite thing (which has been brought up before), without having to have your address flooded with emails. But I think the post count will inspire competition and therefore mindless posting.
The online user notice already exists as BatVink has already pointed out.

BatVink has caught me in the act of my daily browse.

"Dooooh you!" <shakes fist in an Oliver Hardy sort of way />

I do tend to browse a lot more than I post. Wish I could be some use more often.
Perhaps provide a daily etching of the shenanigans in Liverpool, or not... your choice really.

But I digress...... carry on.

We *used* to have a visible post count but it was disabled because people were posting crap to get their numbers higher. Accept it.

Also, an old timer's forum doesn't really make sense. What's the point? We have Geek Culture for keeping in touch.

I think the forum is fine the way it is. I've been to other forums, but usually it ends up being cluttered by accessories people don't really need.

Only feature I would want added is that when you hover over a thread title it displays the first sentence of the first post so you can get a better idea of what the thread is about before clicking it.

Example of what I mean can be seen here: http://www.guildwarsguru.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?s=602e37680b58a5d40eacb0ae53b28a49&f=2.

A way to search only threads which we've posted in or viewed would be good (Often when I have a problem I remember that I saw a solution to it somewhere, but because there is no way to see threads that we've posted in or viewed before I can never find it again)

The search requires you to be precise about the title, it should work like General Web Searches
IE:
Quote: "Sprite+Alpha"

You cant do this here, if somethink is labeled "Change alpha of a Sprites", then a search of "Sprite Alpha" will not find it, thats quite annoying, sometimes when you've seen a thread, you wont remember te exact title, but a word or two that was in it.

Also a Search By Title/Contents/Source like you can in the Codebase would be good

The little green online dot would be good and easy to implement.
