I downloaded the GIMP addon ( http://nifelheim.dyndns.org/~cocidius/dds/ )

But an error came up



Any other ways to open DDS files?

oh sorry. For the image I'd use paint.net www.getpaint.net a open source replacement for paint it supports dds and a few other formats or you could just use dbp to view it
