So, I've had HL2 for quite some time now. I just got a new hard drive and reinstalled windows and everything else, including Steam/HL2.
I installed it by downloading steam, logging in, and using steam to just download/install the game.
Counter Strike Source works great.

When I run Half Life 2 (Single Player), I'll start a new game, and it'll load, and as soon as it's done loading the first level, *BAM*, my computer reboots. Just as if someone bumped my reset button, but no one did.
I haven't had my computer do that otherwise, so I'm wondering if anyone knows what's wrong?

Here's my system:

Windows XP Pro SP2
AMD Athlon XP 2600+
ATI Radeon 9800pro w/128megs ram
768 megs ram

All drivers were just installed just... a week and a half ago, so they should be updated. and I never had a problem like this before.

I've run AVG virus full system scan, my computer is as clean as a whistle

Likely crashing. Turn off auto restart on bluescreen.

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/russel_02may13.mspx

From the blue screen, you'll probably be able to figure out the issue, and it's most likely a driver or video card issue.

It might be a heat problem, I've had that before.

and you made sure ALL drivers were installed for EVERYTHING? i had a problem similar to this with the Eve Online Trial. later, i found out that it had to do with my sound card drivers. so, update EVERYTHING: motherboard, sound card, graphics card, Windows, ect. just make sure nothing is left out...

Doubt it, since it's only HL2, and only after it loads, right before it's about to display the level. The problem screams driver issue.

I have the latest with my Video and Sound cards. I'll update everything, mobo and such, just to make sure.

First, turn off auto reboot and read the error. It might give vital clues!

Jerico2day:
I tried turning it off, and all I got was as blue screen... no words... just blue. Weird. I've never seen that before.

I tried installing the new drivers that came out 3 days ago for my video card, but that just kept causing "serious" problems, even without HL2, I got the attached error just running windows.
so uninstalled those drivers, and reinstalled the drivers I had before.

This is weird. And it's only HL2... :/

Oh, and I installed a patch for my sound card drivers that I wasn't sure if I had installed or not... I still get the problem.

good question. After I got that error, I reinstalled my old drivers. Didn't think about checking that error report. :S

I've had similar problems to what Joel is having playing the exact same game with computer specs close to that. I wouldn't rule out heat so quickly.

Try blowing a fan into your case and playing, if it doesn't have symptoms, you've ruled out heat. If you have some sort of heat monitoring/logging tool that came with your stuff try using that too to keep an eye on stuff.

Yes I suppose it definately wouldn't hurt to check it.

why would it kick out at the exact same time every time if it were heat related?

It's always as soon as the first level is done loading.

I've got an AC vent right next to my computer actually, I just opened the side of my case and pointed a fan into it... we shall see.

I had a similar problem with Battlefield 2 a couple of years ago.
Is the disk steam is installed on a SATA drive, perchance?

Mine was SATA on an A7N8X-e mobo, so just updated sata drivers from asus website, and it worked fine after.

We got alot of pcs sent in (@ work) with the same problem. Its usually the CPU overhearing when you use software which uses alot of CPU usage (like Half Life). Check if your heatsink is on properly and that it isnt clogged with dirt and also make sure that it is properly cooled.

I'm still convinced it's some sort of heat issue. But then again I could be wrong.

I'll play my own devils advocate though and break it down.

What happens during load time, and what happens after load time completes? What sort of transition happens? What data is processed where, and to what destination is it going? Your problem would most likely lie in there. What happens after a game loads though? Everything is initialized. Why would a computer crash during that transition from loading to rendering? Think.

Well, there's rendering

Now a heat issue could make the processor/gpu miscalculate and crash the program/cpu.

Since he says no other games do this, I suspect it's not a heat issue, but it could still be.

Try turning down the graphics of the game to see if that works, also check what the game is refreshing your screen at, I remember I could not play the game Alexander because it refreshed at a rate my card could not handle and I could not change it until the game started, it locked up the card and the computer was forced to reboot.

Unless that's the most cpu/graphic intensive game he has.

Okay, I'm just being annoying now lol. Maybe it's heat, maybe it isn't. Just start trying to narrow it down man, and you'll find your problem.

Like I said, open up the side of your computer and have a fan blow in there at top speed. If it still crashes, it's probably not heat.

sorry, I've been out of town all day yesterday and today. So... I'll keep checking on the heat, I should blow all the heat sinks out and stuff.

I'll tell you how it works...

edit;
ok, dusted it out, opened the side, turned the video quality down, and then it bsods at the same point. This time it actually gave me a warning on the blue screen. Didn't say anything about drivers, it did say that it happened after the memory dump started and finished. That's it. :/

Then uninstall the drivers, run driver cleaner to make sure the driver residue is cleaned up (something MS uninstallers suck at. They still haven't gotten it right), and then reinstall the new (well, the old) drivers.

A rule of thumb, don't fix it unless it's broke. Meaning, don't update your drivers unless it's causing problems.
