Does anyone know of a good RTS game? I am looking for one that is not always "build up your fortress to raid and beat down the enemy's fortress", but rather, one that has strategic goals (nodes to hold, special conditions for victory, etc.). Doesn't matter if it is fantasy or sci-fi. Any suggestions would be appreciated

Well, dawn of war is kinda like that. Also universe at war has some extremely fun strategic options.

You'll like dawn of war bcause it's more capturing points than building a base. World in conflict sounds exactly like what you need though.

Ground Control 1 & 2. You have no buildings in it at all in any of them, and in Ground Control 1 you just have a bunch of units and that is all you got and all you can use to make it (really hard sometimes). In Ground Control 2 you can call for more units, but there is still no base building at all (closest thing you can come to is to garrison your units in buildings or cannons).

Darkness, you haunt me. If I give in, I would be an monster beyond imagining. Light, you guide me. Thanks to you, I see past the nothingness. Life, I choose to live in the light.

As has been said get the Warhammer 40K games (all of them)... if you prefer less sci-fi though you'll want Company of Heroes and its expansion... RTS heaven!!

I think it's fairly obvious:

Dawn of War with all expansion packs and any other warhammer games.

Dawn of War follows your description nicely and is a good game - I don't normally play RTS games, but DoW has my seal of approval.

Supreme commander, It may seem like a build a bigger base than theirs then beat them down but thats only one way to play it, theres so much more. There are so many strategies and techniques to complete missions and skirmishes it is crazy. Though skirmish/multiplayer seems to be limited to a few options (assassinate the commander, wipe out the enemy, destroy all construction vehicles etc), Best strategy game ever in my opinion next to Total Annihilation.

Joint task force is also very strategy orientated, though I haven't played too much of it.

Wow! Thank you for all the suggestions. I think I will raid Fileplanet for as many demos as I can get of all the games mentioned, although it seems the majority is saying Dawn of War. I looked it up and it looks awesome. I'm still not going to overlook any of the others mentioned, though. Thank you very much everyone!

Say what? Spore is going to be an RTS? I did not know what kind of game is was going to be from the screen shots, but an RTS was not what I was expecting. That's really cool.

The best RTS is Company of Heroes, a WWII RTS. It's amazing in every way, I'd definitely try the demo if there is one. It's very well made and is focuses a lot on strategy rather than base building.

Ground Control is a little outdated, true, but still a recommendation. Maybe Act of War, which is very unit-focussed.

Empire Earth is pretty old, but I like it. One of the main upsides to it is that you can play in many different ages of earth's history: for example, in the Prehistoric Age you fight with cavemen, rock throwers, and war rafts. Then, you work up through 9 or 10 others (including Bronze,Industrial, and Modern) all the way to the nano age, where you get Cybers and tons of other futuristic tech.

Los Mineros are back in progress!

Stronghold Legends. Stronghold has been a game out for a long time for the PC and is a really fun castle RTS. Then came along Stronghold 2 with 3D and really made things fun, and, finally Stronghold Legends. But, not too many people play it - although when online, there is almost always full rooms.

Wow, this is going to maybe take months, but I plan on downloading demos of all the games suggested here. I really appreciate all the responses!

P.S.- The age of the game won't be a deterrent, as long as it is a good one. I was just playing through FFIII the other day. Thanks!

Just an advice if you decide to test Ground Control 1, do the tutorial. It does not work really as other games (GC 2 is a bit normal in how you do things, but still, it can always be good to do teh tuts in it to).

Thanks for the tip I always do the tutorials for any game I play, or read the manual. I am not one of the "start up the game and turn it off ten minutes later saying it sucked when really I did not know how to play it" kind of people. Thanks again!
