Cool Program
I made a cool little program. It's incomplete, but IMO it's pretty col none the less. The program lets you open raw floppy images and display information about them. The goal of the program is to be able to alter information in the image and control the image as if it were part of the file system it self. The program is for Windows, tested on Windows Vista. Was wondering if any one would be interested in this program, or would like to test it out and let me know all the bugs they find, and what features they might like to see in the program. NOTE: This program has been made to help me quickly (As in through the command line) make GRUB boot images without requiring any input - This program should one day be able to take command line arguments to run commands automatically. Currently the only command line argument it takes is the name of the image you want to load. Note: When I say "command line argument(s)" I don't mean what it can do, rather what parameters you can pass the EXE from the DOS prompt.

Jordan
I just beat Jordan on GH2 (Expert mode + Hyperspeed on). The first time I did it my score was around 180,000~, second time near 200,000~ (upper 190,000~). 4 stars. I've made a video of the second time, click to watch the video.

Cheers,

-naota

I can try it out, it sounds like a good program . I just donĀ“t have any images to try it on. Any idea?

EDIT:

I have tried it now, and even though it is a bit limited at the moment, it is very nice and going in the right direction. have you tried to use "chroot" in Linux? It can do the same thing (you can mount an image with it, and then alter things on it from the CLI as you would do to alter things "normally" in the CLI, like installing software with "apt-get"), so if you want to take a look at something that might inspire you, take a look at it . But I see already that your application will be easier to use.

But note that "chroot" actually is a bit different in the way it works, in some way it is more advanced but much harder to use.

Mr Z, I was not aware of chroot under Linux, I'm making mine for various reasons, but not to compete with any software, or emulate any software, in Linux. I do plan to expand it a bit more so it can be used to fully manage a floppy image for free, as I don't believe in using commercial software for these things (They should've been built into the OS' shell, right?).

Actually, it's funny you should mention chroot, as I plan to integrate the ability to open .IMG and .ISO files in AUCOS and be able to treat them as if they were their own floppy drives or CDs (Course ISOs will be more customizable than actual CDs).

Anyways, thank you.

Cheers,

-naota

I only thought of it as something that might inspire you, or help you in some way . Not something that you compete with or try to emulate; chroot actually works a bit too different to be emulated in a way practical to what you have in mind (it is not even made to do this, but it can be used to, but you have to do some steps before, like mounting it to the filesystem and so on, so it is not really made for it, but it works quite well to do it). For a better description, you can look it up in wikipedia.

Anyway, it sounds like a nice idea to include it in AUCOS. Not every OS has that inbuilt, at last not to my knowlage. When you have any updates, I will gladly try them out.

Theres a file included with it, AUCOS.IMG, if you run that in QEMU or Bochs as a floppy disk image, you can see what I've done recently, which isn't much, just added GRUB support and reworked the keyboard system.

Ahhh, I meant of this FloppyShell thing . But it would be nice to take a look at how AUCOS is coming along. Have to figure out how to work QEMU, though.

Aaron didn't get 100%, he just passed the song. Still quite impressive though, nice job.

@Alucard94
hahaha, I like your sig. Dunno what your edit was, but I doubt I'd take offense to it.

@AndrewT
Thanks. Technically, I made it 100% through the song, lol, just didn't get 100% notes hit, I think I got more of around 84% - But I'm still very happy I passed the song

@Thraxas
Yeah, I only got 84% - but I'm still happy I beat the song

Speaking of Guitar Hero, I finally beat Raining Blood/Devil went down to Georgia on expert. Only thing left for me to do is get 5 stars on all Expert songs (only missing 1 on Knights of Cydonia and 2 on Raining Blood) and I will be an official GH nerd. I still can't get past 2% on TTFAF though, so I guess that's a good sign.

I can't strum fast enough and keep a steady pace to get the first part of Knights of Cydonia...The second half I can get almost 100% though. I found Raining Blood to be harder than Devil Went Down to Geogia, mainly because the "Flood" part had a lot of yellow blue yellow blue yellow blue yellow blue yellow blue. Hard on the fingers.

Nice program..
And word of advice.. I'm Chuck Morris? Do I get a merit? Do I get a super cool fanbase? Do I get to eat hearts of the living? Do I HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT THE EMO LAWN WHEN THERE IS A NUCLEAR WASTELAND AND THEY HAVE NOTHING TO CUT!?

Nah, sorry for the spam anyways, Nice work on the Jordan song.

I can do all songs on GH2+GH3 except The End, and Through the Fire and Flames. (Expert + Hyperspeed)

I've been trying at The Way It Ends recently, but the way the combos work is what gets me. I can do the intro to Through the Fire and Flames 100% on Slowest and Slower mode in Practice. 90~% on Slow, and fail at normal speed. I can do all the rest of the song past that, mainly.

@venge
For the strumming take your thumb and index finger, and pinch them together on the strummer, then it's really simple. For the raining blood - flood part, simply get used to your fingers, practice it a bit.

Thanks all.

I always strum up and down, it's just that I can't strum quite fast enough with just moving my wrist, but if I use my whole arm it goes too fast. It's just at an awkward speed.

Ooohh. I don't strum up and down, btw, only down. I find it easier that way. Well, practice makes perfect.

BTW, I actually popped a blood vessel in my eye from playing guitar hero, so I haven't played since about 3 days after I posted this thread. <Or 2, not sure when I posted this <checks>>

Well not always, but more often than a lot of people. It took some getting used to, but I think it was mostly from playing the original GH when Hammer-ons and pull offs were nearly impossible, so you almost had to strum up and down on the fast solos.

I've never played it, does the song have a name?

Also, btw, I sorta stopped working on that program temporarily, I was rewriting it to be more efficient, then I got bored, now I'm entering a contest and will try to win that. After that I'll be working on the Twilight Engine, and ummm, I'll probably still work on that too, just not as much. Which is strange because I was completely into working on it, lol. Just had a slight problem and had to rewrite it so I could minimize the problems in the future.

If that's how you define a GH nerd then I'm like a freakin' super nerd. I've five-starred the GH3 career and have over 40 gold-starred songs/FCs.

That's awesome! I've gotten one -3 run on Knights, all in the intro part. I can't stand Raining Blood either. And nice work on TTFAF. Trust me, if you can make it that far beating it shouldn't be very difficult.

Wow, that's impressive AndrewT. How long have you been playing GH, and how many hours per day would you say you've put into it? Just out of curiosity.

Well, I've been playing since GH2, but I've only been playing more seriously since GH3. I don't play as much anymore, probably about half an hour to 45 minutes a day, but I used to be totally obsessed, and played like 2 or 3 hours a day. It's not as fun anymore 'cause ya don't improve as fast, so it's like you spend an hour just to improve a score by 10K. But ya, I still play now and then when I'm bored.

Hey Aaron, I have made a little experiment with the AUCOS thing. It works quite well. But when I boot into AUCOS (using qemu), all I get is a black screen and I cannot type anything or do anything at all. So, if you are supposed to be able to do anything else then getting a black screen, it does not work for some reason . But if that is all at the moment, then it works perfectly .

Anyway, mind if I attatch the experiment?

Well, I worked it out by copying some QEMU files to the "right" location. And note that if uploading this is against the QEMU license, please notify me (checked it, and it was licensed under GLPL or GPL, so I should be allowed to upload it, but if not, tell me, and I will take it down).

Extract this directly to an USB stick. Then plug it out and plug it in again. Quite nice, actually . At last I like it. Note that you have to have logged into Windows to do it. I know it works with XP, but Vista should work fine (I hope).

Take care,
Mr Z

I made it 81% on Through the Fire and Flames!

I later made it about 30% without star power, and I can make it 12-14% through it without star power a bit easily. I usually make it 4% through the beginning of the song, but if I play The Devil Went Down To Georgia before playing TTFAF I do better.

I also beat The Way It Ends.

Nice job on the 81%! I failed around 80% dozens of times before beating it cuz you always use your starpower in the solos and don't have any to use there.

I beat Through the Fire and Flames! (Expert)

I made a video of it (When I started getting 80% constantly I decided to start recording). I'll have to wait to upload it for a while though because it's 104MB... Anyways, hopefully I can get the video uploaded today.

I haven't beat the song since then though, made it around 80% a few times, but I bet I could do it again today.

PS: Now to find a way to play the full version of The Devil Went Down To Georgia on the PS2... Ideas anyone?
