I got 3dstudio max about a week or so ago and today I just created 4 of the greastest models of the short time (the two main characters of my game and there starting weapons) that ive had it but being stupid and ignoring that fact that my computer doesnt have a billion rams I set the mesh smooth render level to 10 frooze up my computer and never got to save them... anyway im too frustrated to make them again today but I did make a quick substitute. no wonder it froze with meshsmooth 10 on the max i have ever used is 4 and that's on a 2GHZ P4 256DDR i would reccomend you only use mesh smooth 1 or 2 max for game characters and not even on the whole mesh just where you need it!

I wouldn't use a single iteration of mesh smooth for a game character,j ust the modifier set with 0 iterations to take the blocked look off, or I'd use smoothing groups

even for CG i never go above 2... not really any point - 1 should normally always be enough if you REALLY need MeshSmoothing, especially as your main depth and perception to the model should be done in the pixel theatre.
MeshSmooth/MeshDivide/Tesselation are tools to be used sparingly to enhance the look by giving extra vertex depth to it and should ALWAYS be worked on over Quads ... if you don't then it won't help a blind bit.

Despite it's shortcomings, the meshsmooth filter can make some pretty decent beveled or chamfered effects if you play around with the strength and relax settings.

That said, I haven't used it for several months now...
