Ok, so 2/27 is still an F, but what?

How could the examiner seriously give the person points? I mean the student swore at him on the paper.

On top of that he would have got more points if he had included an exclamation mark too. What is on the syllabus nowadays?

The question he was 'answering' was "Describe the room you are in" I think.

....

Also, anybody see the moving skyscraper that's going to be built in Dubai? That thing looks pretty amazing.

When I read "Dubia", I thought this was about something else. At least, I thought it was fitting with the first part of the title being what it was.

Whoops, typo... I'll ask a mod to correct that.

If any mod could just change "Dubia" to "Dubai" in the title, it would be much appreciated, thanks.

Yeah. I heard about this on the radio a bit ago. I agree with the examiner as well.

And about the skyscraper. Wow. that's pretty cool. At first I thought...well...why? But then of course...I responded in my head with...well...it's really cool that's why. And the article gave an even better reason

A 6 year old could write **** off if they were shown it, so should they be able to give points for an English exam designed for people more that twice there age?

I knew the 'f' word when I was about that age, all I'd have to do is have seen the word to realise it's almost spelled the same as 'duck', which the teacher would have already taught me.

If you can't demonstrate you've learned anything beyond the age of six, and it's obvious the person wasn't taking it seriosly, so a '0' would be fitting. It shows nothing of language skills needed.

Depending upon the quality of the handwriting, I might have given it a mark for spelling and formation of letters. Otherwise, it would be a zero in my book.

Oh for the love of God... GCSE students aren't being tested on whether or not they can put a pen on the paper and make funny symbols that join up to make words. They're tested on an ability to actually say something (hopefully intelligible) to answer the question. Giving this kid marks is like giving marks in a history exam for writing "you are the son of HITLER!"

Though I have to agree that the difference between 2 and 0 marks is negligible. But it just steams me up, because A-Level investigators are going to introduce an A* grade to show who's the cream of the crop (when in actual fact this is really only a temporary solution, because eventually we're going to have to invent the A** or whatever) and then it turns out that the marks aren't worth squat anyway because you get them for "**** off". It just annoys me that so much emphasis is placed on the importance of good grades (a bad enough strategy as is), and then it turns out the grades aren't worth what people think they are.

*Sigh* The sooner I get out of this House-of-Usher type madhouse of an education system the better...

I'm not actually a Kiwi, I just randomly thought it up one day.

Well, my older sister passed GCSE maths when she only answered about 4 questions and maybe only got 2 right (she's useless at maths). Clearly something is wrong.

You see my time at school and A Levels was where there was the real 'dumbing down' criticism and my counter criticism is to improve the syllabus or hire people who can teach better. Like you said, clearly something is wrong.

It seems teaching is becoming a problem and it seems the exams boards are softening themselves up so that more people pass and they can sit in denial saying - "teaching's becoming worse? I think it's getting better, look that kid got an A."

Quote: "What's the difference between 2 points vs 0 Seriously >.<"

Simple, it shows the standards of the examiner - if the examiner is willing to give 2 points because the person understands a concept a 6 year old could, then what other standards are letting slip with the examiner? The standards of exams for GCSE and A Level are slipping to accommodate for bad grades - I realised from doing A Levels at my school instead of college, the education was crap - I spoke to people around my own age at Uni, they seemed to share the same opinions about their schools.

The examiner does have a point though. The guy failed everything, besides showing that he knows some vocabulary, that he can make a grammatically correct sentence and that he has understanding of interpunction, something many forum lurkers lack.

Heck, we should have a Apollo welcoming exam like the GCSE's.

Passing your Year 6 SATs should show you're capable of that, surely any exams beyond that should look for more advanced things than really simple stuff they would have shown in much earlier exams.

Nah, as I understand the person living in the apartment can turn his floor at will and stop whenever he wants. So anyone in the aparmtent will be prepared. They also said it takes a few hours to completely rotate.

Also, I don't think anyone who is worried about getting sick will be spending, 3 to 36 million dollars on an apartment ^_^

I was always being moved between schools, so when i took my exams i was in the bottom sets for most subjects, this ment it was impossable for me to score higher that a D, In maths I scored one of the highest scores in my class, only only got a D, although the exam was pritty easy, there was a set below us to got to take an easier exam under the bases that they where in the bottom group, and everyone in the class got a d there.

I remember many years ago when i was taking my mock exams, i was in bottom set for sciance and we got to take the exam paper fromt he year before, it had questions like, "here is a Diagramme of the human body, Label where the following organs are, heart, Lungs, Kidney, Ect", Supprise Supprise, we all aced the mock exam.

Personally i think kids should be kept in school till at least 18, and that after GCSE's at 15-16, they should automatically have to take at least 1 or 2 a Levels in the extra years.

That's similar to question we got on the higher set paper I got, though my biology teacher said nothing about a Kung Fu gland.

I would have given him/her half a mark though - they weren't far off...well kind of and you must admit they didn't do too bad a represented testes, it would have made a rude image otherwise.

This guy probably got an F for Biology, but I bet he/she didn't do too bad at art. (Though GCSE art wasn't exactly that difficult, you didn't need to be a good at art, your work just needed to fill certain requirements)

There's nothing wrong with the song, believe me far worse music could get in your head, like that Kylie Minogue song, "Can't get you out of my head".
